what size are the screws?

Screws are metric M4-0.7 and are 2 1/2 inches long.

Can linger cord be used and what type of cord is needed?

Any size wire is fine 22awg or larger. I use extension cord of at least 16awg simply so that the wire and insulation is sturdy enough not to break if it's pulled or stepped on. This fan load is much less than 1amp draw (only 8watts).
