Book review
The book “Girl in pieces” by Kathleen Glasgow is a young adult fiction book. This book primarily explores the subjects of mental health, trauma, self harm, and resilience. This book is a story about a 17-year-old girl named Charlotte Davis, who’s been through a lot for a girl her age. Right from the start her life is a nightmare. She is put in a mental facility for her self-harm, you soon find out that cutting is her way of dealing with all the trauma she is going though. She has been through all like being homeless, her best friend committed suicide, she was in a abusive relationship, and her mother wasn’t really there for her. Everything in her life has just gone down hill for her.She has a friend named Mikey who lives in Arizona, so when she gets out of the hospital she goes and stays with him. She has known Mikey before everything in her life fell apart. Now that she is out of the hospital, she hopes this is her chance to start over, but things don’t go so smoothly for her. She soon gets a job as a dishwasher at this coffee shop and she meets a group of people who also have their own struggles just like her. There’s Riley, a musician with a super dark vibe, Then there’s Blue, she is tough and has been through her own version of torture, and Felix, who’s just genuinely a nice guy.Riley is the most complicated part of Charlie’s story. She is drawn to Riley because he too has been hurt and is still hurting. But their relationship is off and on. Sometimes it’s sweet and they comfort each other in a way no one else understands, but it is also toxic. Riley is self-destructive, and he tends to drag Charlie down with him. Even if they want to help each other, they end up making things worse for both of them. While she’s trying to adjust, Charlie starts to return to one thing that made her feel a little more in control, which is art. She used to love drawing before everything happened, and now it’s a way for her to cope. Art is like therapy for her, it’s a way for her to say things she can’t put into words. Even though she is still struggling, drawing makes her feel better, and makes her feel a tiny bit more whole. Through all of her struggles, her boss at the coffee shop is super supportive and encourages her to keep drawing, and it’s probably the best thing for her.By the end of the book, Charlie isn’t “fixed.” She’s still got a long way to go and she knows it. But she is stronger, she’s found people who genuinely care about her and she’s learned just maybe she deserves something better that all the hurt she’s had. There is no super happy ending , but there’s hope. When I first got the book I thought it was just a regular story about a teenage girl in school and she goes through a lot during one year of school. But when I started reading, I found out even more. The story goes deeper than I thought it would and it was not a normal story about a teenage girl. It really went in depth about her life from day one and it tells you about a girl who has mental issues and is abused and at the end she still isn’t fixed. I didn’t think that it would go so much in depth for mental health, trauma, and self harm. It was a very powerful text that talks about real problems that happen in real life. Others should read this book because it is a powerful read because it offers a realistic portrayal of trauma, mental health struggles, fostering empathy and understanding. The story of resilience and hope through recovery can inspire readers and raise awareness, encouraging a compassionate approach to mental health issues.
