No, you turn it over. The underside of the seat is the knee pad.

It's 6 x 16 inches , I love mine .

Q: what is the seat height from the ground? I have short legs and don't want them dangling

The seat height is slightly above 17 inches. The kneeling height is just over 4 inches. It appears to be quite sturdy but I’m waiting on spring to arrive before I can make an assessment based on using it.
