Just understand the writing is very 90s early 2000s rulebooks. If you are not getting the answer you are looking for. Do a search online. I have always found a post where someone gives the page number. I played a couple moch games on my own to learn the rules. Then was able to teach my friend while we were under the influence. After about 4 rounds we were playing at a good pace. Our second match, we were both sober and played just as quick with almost issue remembering the game as it is pretty basic. Lots and lots of simple rules. This allowed us to play as strategic or as caveman as we like. I love it already. The big thing to think about is time. I recommend about 5 hours if you want to play a game to finish. Otherwise, set yourself a goal. Example: the player who has the least amount of tonnage on the field at the end loses. If you need a winner. This box comes with alpha strike cards for that version of the game. The rulebook in this box tells you the website for the official downloads. Every boxset has a download for the printable character sheets to play with these rules. So you can go back and forth if you want to try both games. As a hint, the quickplay rules for alphastrike are a free download on the official site. Those are the same as you get in the alphastrike box. You can try that version of the game with these minis and cards without buying the other box. Though i bet you will. Have fun. Age: if you are playing with your kid. Id recommend the age where they are learning basic math. Counting and addition subtraction. The beginner box gives you a cut down version of this game. If you look it up online, you can play that version with this boxset too.

Fantastic product! Arrived in time to get the Locust mostly painted in time to play with it the very next day. Fantastic mechs, and a very enjoyable game. We’re combining Battle Tech Alpha Strike with roleplay using Savage World. It’s the best of both worlds, where I get to really develop the pilot’s character. I highly recommend this box for anyone wanting to start or enlarge their mech army. Half humanoid mechs, and half very much not, this box contains a really nice mix of power, speed, and form.

this is a great boxset, you get basic rule and everything else you need to play Battletech. its a great value for the money. if you bought the mech separately would cost more than the box.

This set is a great addition to anyone starting out. I’ve been playing since the mid 80’s and this is a great addition to the basic starter set. It has plastic mechs ready to paint or play as is. It has trees, hex maps, extra punch out mechs for a larger game and rules for classic and alpha strike. I bought two, one to open and one to go in my collection. All pluses and no minuses for me. Glad I bought it.

While many BT sets seem to be leaning into some sort of bizarre "grimdark" space like 40k, it's nice to see that the classic Battletech experience is still available.

This starter box gives you everything and more, maps, scenarios, extra cardboard minis because why not ? All game rules, datasheets and a blank datasheet to make your own mechs, cheat sheets to help you, lore books and primers for the tabletop game universe! While Alpha strike gives you more plastic minis, for both classic and alpha strike type of game, i think this box is better :) To people from Brazil interested in this box, i bought it and arrived in perfect conditions and it was about 550 R$ at the time C

Picked this up to get up to date on the current edition of the rules. I have been playing Battletech since the Mid 80's, when it first hit the scene. While it is not the best tabletop wargame, and far from the best mecha game, I have a lot of miniatures and figures, and the rules have not changed much. While there is a cheaper "Starter Set" it has somewhat abbriged rules and does not include the large reference cards with the complete charts and weapons stats, or as many miniatures. PROS- The box set includes several miniatures now, plastic with decent detail. It has Dice, and handy reference cards, and maps. Everything you need to play right out of the box. It is certainly possible to buy the box, and play a game on the day you receive it. This certainly beats the days of cardboard counters and having to photocopy out the reference tables or have the book handy at all times. There are also a lot of accessories and resources for the game online and in markets and gamestores from 40+ years of support, such as record sheets, heat dials, special dice, additional maps, and maybe OOP books and settings that are still compatible. There are online tools for force creation and calculating Battle Point Value to help make somewhat balanced forces (something we did not have in the 80s and 90s). CONS- It is a bit pricey in my opinion. The rules can be somewhat technical and will take a few games to get the feel for it. You will need to print out record sheets for the mechas to track heat and damage. The dots on the record sheet can be a challenge for those with bad eyes (or even good eyes in a dimly lit game shop). The more mechs you field in a game or control by a single player, the more complicated battles get. I recomend new players start with small "Duels" to get the feel for the game. It is a chart heavy game. TIPS- I recomend picking up some clear notebook protector pages and dry erase markers for your record sheets so they are reusable. I also suggest getting some small, red Paperclips which can be clipped to the record sheets and slid up and down to track the heat on a mech. While the figures certainly look better painted, you can certainly find games who are not concerned by that. It can still be a lot of fun, and very tactical themed.

It’s Battletech. Do I need to say more? Amazing game that deleted us all in the 80’s and continues to be awesome to play. Yeah, it’s for us old dudes but it is also for all you younger gamers. Battletech is a great system with amazing lore and content. They have streamlined it with Alpha Strike and continue to maintain Classic Battletech. Check out all of the systems as well as the support material. This boxed set is great. I have all the other boxed sets and still got this. The quality of the miniatures and the material is great. You can be playing matches in minutes. Tons of fun if you want a short match or can have grand battles that take hours and hours. The choice is yours!
