Good vacuum for ashes
Just got this today and tried it out. For what I spent, I think it’s worth it. It doesn’t have a huge suction power but it gets the job done. It doesn’t like larger pieces so I had to break up the larger burnt pieces of wood. Highly recommend it. It seems to seal good so there’s not a fine dust coming from it. I haven’t cleaned it yet, but the build quality of it is good. It’s pretty self explanatory for assembly.

Works well, but the suction is so so
It works well, and the suction is fine, but I find myself having to go over the same spots a few times. Used to clean ashes from our pellet stove, and the tip is so long that I can't really get it in the corners, and without the tip the hose is too wide. I mean, for the price it's good and it does it's job, but I wish the tip on the hose was either different, or that there were multiples options.

Does the basic job
Overall a good product. It is lightweight, relatively quiet for a vacuum cleaner and collects the ash. Small enough that I can tuck it away easily in a corner of the room. It saves me from the risk of straining my back and getting covered in soot from trying to move the heavy iron grate and iron plate against the back wall of the fireplace aside in order to sweep the ashes out. But, the suction could be stronger. It will pick up ash, but if there are little pieces of wood that did not completely disintegrate in the fire, the suction is not strong enough to pick those up. Also, the attachment at the end of the hose is round. It is small enough to reach most areas of the fireplace, but to get into the cracks and crevices around the grate, it would be good to have an additional, flatter hose attachment, similar to the ones that usually come with vacuum cleaners to get into corners and other tight spaces. Finally, it would have been good/neater to build it with a compartment to holster the hose when not in use. The hose trails off onto the floor when you put the product away.

Outstanding!
I just started using my fireplace, and being single dad, I have to find that balance between keeping a tidy home and being lazy. This wonderful devices helps out greatly!Used with the Dust Deputy I managed to vacuum up my fireplace after burning five of those fancy fire logs and two chunks of real firewood, along with a bunch of sand placed in there by the previous owner for some reason. Very little ash made it to the vacuum, and barely any made it past the first pre-filter. Typically one would use the shovel and scoop most of the ash and debris out, then tidy up with the vacuum. Using this setup I was able to clean everything with the vacuum.https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07YX6P48R/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s05?ie=UTF8&psc=1No ash or stink came out of the vacuum. There were no defects or damage when I received the vacuum. In fact, the box it came in was damaged, but the drum was fine. Everything feels solid, and the hose locks into the vacuum smoothly. This does NOT feel like the second cheapest ash vacuum one can find on line. It feels very high quality. It is small. Very small. Alone it is not going to vacuum a fireplace full of ash, nor is it meant to. If that is what you want to do, you'll need something much bigger. While it may hold 4.8 gallons of...something...ash is a whole different animal, as it will clog the filters long before you get that much sucked up.It does not come with a long hose, either. It is powerful, has a cheap but handy carry handle, and keeps a low profile.Highly Recommend!

Machine worked twice, customer service was great.
The machine (ASHJ201) worked fine, twice. I say fine because it vacuumed up light ash from my pellet stove and didn't blow it all over my living room like my shop vac. It was not strong suction and I can see why some other reviewers may have had a hard time getting it to work on their pellet grills. The second time I used it, I noticed an electrical burning smell. The next time I went to use it, it wouldn't turn on. I ran through all of the troubleshooting from the manual, but nothing got it going. I called customer service and, though I did have to wait a while, I spoke to a very nice representative who asked a few questions and then processed my return. I asked for a refund as I didn't want to bother waiting on another machine which might just burn out again. I would guess that the motor is underpowered and overstrained with the extra filtration. Yes, it's a pain to box it up and go to UPS, but I'm happy they are taking the return and refunding my money. On another note, and this is not Snow Joe's fault, the accessory pack that Amazon recommends with this item does not fit, it is for a smaller machine.

you want one of these - super happy
Really happy with this.makes what is usually a horrible job easy.filter works great and is easy to clean and reinstallsince it's a mesh bag you can transfer into a waste container without spillage (always a hassle)good suction powerit's a practical capacity (not too small, not unwieldy big...given how ash spreads, that's important)great if you've got a pllet grill/stove to get into fire pot or nooks, crannies (lso good for trad fireplace of course)ALWAYS REMEMBER TO MAKE SURE YOUR ASHES ARE COLD COLD COLD (I suggest emptying into a metal can away from structures)
