Expert advice on portable ham radio operations
One of the most fun and exciting ways to enjoy amateur radio is to operate "in the field". Taking a portable station into the outdoors on foot is challenging and rewarding, and a healthier way to operate than sitting in a chair at home. Mr. Thomas' book is a terrific introduction and reference for this activity. He offers advice on equipment, operating in varying environments, and how to get the most out of your on-air time in a number of organized activities. Stuart is an expert in his own right having operated from mountaintops, urban centers, and everywhere between; but he also draws from and references the experiences of many other ham radio portable operators. Whether you want to get involved in the fun, or are just curious about this corner of ham radio, Mr. Thomas' book is an excellent introduction and guide.

Helped me set up a better GO BAG for field work
The book is a very useful and well thought out source of good ideas to help those HAMS that want to take working in the field to the next level. Weight is every thing when hiking to distant locations to operate low power ham equipment, and antenna efficiency is vital to being heard by other operators. Very useful information on all these and related aspects, and all from experience of other hams.Had more time to go through the book and it is crammed with very useful hints and other information for those operating and those wishing to operate out in the field. Excellent Book for Ham Enthusiasts.

Good book, room for improvement
Great information for the HAM radio operators on the go. Chapter 5 Power Supplies needs MUCH MORE information on solar power; a few lines, links and a picture isn't enough for a book on portable operations. It feels like the author punted on this topic. On the other hand, chapters 6, 7, and 8 articulate well the many portable antennae, feed lines, propagation and activities operators can learn about and apply in portable HAM operations. Excellent!

Do not buy from the ARRL directly, because the shipping doubles price of the book. Buy from Amazon
Great book, you gotta love ham radio. Lots of neat stuff in here. I really enjoyed it.Very handy to have around as a reference book. It's definitely worth buying, and it's cheaper buying it here than it is buying it from the ARRL, BECAUSE THEY CHARGE $20 SHIPPING. Amazon does not. If you buy this book directly from ARRL your paying twice the cost of the book almost just have it shipped definitely buy this from Amazon only.

Jam packed with tips, tricks and weblinks for everything discussed in the book.
Amazing how much info packed into this book. If he mentions something, you'll also find a web link nearby. Not just for the NEW QRP operator. I've been kickin since the mid 80's but Stu reminded me about tips and tricks for QRP that I had forgotten long ago, along with teaching me new ways of running QRP anywhere, and everywhere you can imagine. This book is well worth the price !! Great job Stuart !! 73 de N4BRM

START EXPERIENCING PORTABLE OPERATING
This book outlines what is necessary to use when one wants to do ham radio on the road. The author offers suggestions as to what will work in that scenario and suggests how to plan and proceed. He carefully discusses the entire matter of weight on the road. An excellent starter for the inexperienced ham operator.

Good introduction for beginners ...
The book is well thought out and appropriately illustrated. In my opinion, it is largely aimed at beginners who need a book giving a panoramic view of portable operation. Personally, having been involved in portable operation for over 40 years, I cannot say that it taught me something I did not already know. So, although this is a fine publication and is interesting reading, make sure it is not too basic for you ...
