Updated Review: After I left the original review below, I was contacted by HSI Customer Service and was offered a free replacement flat iron, even though I had already returned mine to amazon. How many companies these days do that?! I was very impressed and appreciated their generosity. I was excited to give this iron another chance, especially for free! I must have gotten a defective one in the first place, because this one worked great!! It kept it's heat the entire time, I had it at 390. My hair is very smooth and soft, I can't stop running my hands through it! I am very impressed. I think many of the one star reviews would be changed if they gave it another shot. I ordered the regular dial model, but was sent the digital model in exchange, and I love it. I also curled my hair with it, and it worked great! Gorgeous waves, and faster than my curling iron. Unfortunately they didn't last any longer than they usually do, but I think that's my hair's fault. I am happy to say I love HSI customer service and this product! Thanks! Original Review: I really wanted to love this flat iron!! And based on the reviews I thought I would. But there is nothing to love, it doesn't work! It heated up fine, the light was green in about 2 minutes. I ran it over a section of my hair, and although my hair got very hot, it didn't straighten or smooth it at all. I have long, light brown wavy/frizzy hair. I was putting a fair amount of pressure on the flat iron, to make sure the plates were tight against my hair as I slid it slowly down the section of hair. It just didn't do anything at all! Also, the light would go back to red after each section, and take about 30 seconds to go back to green, so even if this straightener had worked, it would have taken forever to do my whole head at that rate. It just wouldn't stay hot even for one pass. My hair was clean, dry, and product free, except for a heat protectant spray I had let dry. I was taking fairly small sections of hair, and there was just no reason I can think of that this flat iron should not have been doing it's job. I tell you all this so you know it is unlikely user error that is causing this negative review, but the straightener! I suppose there is a chance I received a defective straightener, but I didn't have the patience to give it another shot, I just wanted my money back. I shop from amazon all the time, but have never returned anything, so I was unsure whether to contact the seller about a return, or amazon. I went to the "my account" page on amazon.com, and next to the order for this straightener, there was a button that said "return", so I clicked it and started the return process. Amazon couldn't have made it any easier! All I had to do was print out a return invoice to include with this return, and amazon had UPS come pick it up from my house the very next day for free! So I give five stars for amazon customer service, but unfortunately zero stars for this product.

Updated Review December 30, 2018--I recently got an email from the company saying they were working to improve their online reputation and wanted to send me a new flatiron in the hopes that my opinion would improve. That in itself earns another star! I couldn't believe that almost 5 years later they cared about my review. So, I got a new pink flatiron with a digital screen instead of a black one with just a temperature dial. It came with a trial size pouch of argan oil, a product guide, important safety instructions, and a warranty certificate. No grammar errors anywhere (see original review). I used it for the first time last night and it did a pretty good job! Still didn't revolutionize my life, but this flatiron seems to be better than my original. This plus the customer service it gets 4 stars this time around. Original Review (3 stars) January 5, 2014 --I bought this after seeing all the thousands of positive reviews. I went into it not sure what to expect, since the negative reviews did seem to have merit. I guess my opinion of the product falls somewhere in between. I have wavy-ish, frizzy-ish, long red hair. Normally I just let it air dry naturally, but recently got bangs and wanted them to look sleek. I had an 80 Euro straightener from Europe that I recently gave to my sister so I was looking for a replacement. I bought this one at the same time as a Conair Infiniti straightener that I found for $15 to compare the two. I ended up keeping this one because it was just enough better than the Conair. At high temperatures, this straightener is pretty great. My bangs get straight in no time, and stay that way for at least a day. There's no frizz and my hair doesn't ever get caught, which was a big must for me. However, it still takes ages to get the rest of it straight, and the wavier parts by my crown don't get straight no matter what. And forget about using this at a lower temperature setting - nothing happens unless it's more than 3/4 of the way to the maximum. But that being said, it was cheap and it works to straighten my bangs. I do wonder about the product's authenticity - the sticker warning attached to the outlet plug has some ungrammatical English - "If it does not turn on. Press firmly on reset button". I would expect that a real $200 straightener would pay closer attention to its labels. Also, while the box has a picture of a small glass jar of Argan oil, what was actually contained in the box was a one-use sealed pouch. So that was a bit disappointing, although many of the reviewers said they'd found the same thing. So for $40 this was a good purchase, but I'm sure there are much better straighteners out there. This one hasn't revolutionized my life or anything like the positive reviews made me think it would.
