Don't hate me...read first.
I'm in the hunt for a 1970 SS396 L34 (350hp) Chevelle with PS,PB,A/C and auto so my wife can drive it. I'm willing to go to $70-75k.I am not a collector, and this will be my first and most likely last classic muscle car. I'm 68. I suppose my first classic car was a new 1972 white GTO w/400 that I bought in '72. Wish I still had that!I also know that because of whatever reason, GM USA does not have all the important information about the Chevelle on the VIN. So you have to know what to look for and where. It's sort of like being an investigator/detective. Only you don't get shot at. Or maybe you do....I bought both the Chevelle and GTO books (I was also thinking about a "goat") from the same publisher. My biggest complaint with this book is all the blasted numbers! I don't care a twiddle snot about how many of each style Chevelle was sold each year, or which plant. These types of seemingly useless statistics parade all through this book; page after page, droning on and on.Pictures are very few, small and hard to see. What I simply wanted is what stampings/numbers should be on a genuine Chevelle SS 396 and where can I find them. I don't think that's something radical or wacky, just some photos that are clear, close-up and an arrow pointing towards the stampings would be great...….whoops, I shouldn't say arrow, I might be called American-Indian racist; let's say a pointer then.I looked up a few page article in an old Hot Rod magazine on the internet, and it gave me a hundred times more useful information that either of these two books.Okay....all you Chevelle SS fanatics can now start yelling at me, but please keep comment civil.....okay?
