How long will this nonsense continue?
How much longer are we going to pretend that nursing diagnoses are working?NANDA started 55 years ago. Back then, it was a good idea. It was plausible. The idea was to promote the nursing profession. But, after decades of trying, it’s clear nursing diagnoses don’t work. They’re not going to work. They’re not getting better. And they’re just holding the nursing profession back. What exactly is wrong with this book, and the system of nursing diagnoses as a whole?1. Look at how many medical diagnose exist. Thousands. How many nursing diagnoses are in this book? Think of your patient and how many issues arise that you need to address. This short list doesn’t even scratch the surface. One might say, but that means we need to work harder to develop more diagnoses. I would say, 55 years is enough time to see this system isn’t working.2. Does having a nursing diagnosis even matter to providing safe patient care? In my research of nursing regulation and disciplinary actions, there is not a single case of any nurse accused of or disciplined for making an incorrect nursing diagnosis. Yes, physicians sometimes misdiagnose, or aren’t able to come up with a diagnosis. It’s an inexact science. But it’s clear that whatever nursing diagnosis you come up with for your patient doesn’t really matter.3. Mockery of evidence-based practice: Imbalanced energy field?! This is an insult to nursing professionalism and science.I could go on, but this is not the venue. Nursing diagnoses only exist at this point because a small minority of nurses inexplicably value this and have it included in Joint Commission standards. We need to stand up and say enough is enough. Stop this nonsense.
