With his idiomatic and graceful style, pianist Philip Martin has established himself as the foremost exponent of Gottschalk. Much of his music is by no means easy to play; it requires an impeccable technique matched with élan and joie de vivre for its most effective execution. Although not essentially a great composer, Louis Moreau Gottschalk had a unique spontaneity and individuality which Martins performances bring vividly to the fore. The composers music was hugely popular during his lifetime and his works display a real melodic charm and a great sense of fun. Each of the eight discs in Martins extensive Gottschalk series has received wide acclaim and left pianophiles eagerly awaiting the next issue. Fantastic value for incredible playing
Delighted to find this set of all the Gottschalk piano music played by a man who obviously has 8 fingers on each hand. His virtuosity is amazing but also delicate rather than overpowering as some others have been .Just love it and the price was amazing too.Listening to the melodies just made me happy.

Unkonventionelle, sehr gut unterhaltende Klaviermusik!
Werdegang und Leben Louis Moreau Gottschalks waren sehr bunt, nicht frei von Extremen und auf jeden Fall ungewöhnlich. All das sind auch Kennzeichen seiner Klavierkompositionen. Seine zahlreichen Klavierwerke, die er eigenhändig aufgeführt und mit denen er Nord- und Südamerika bereist und seinen Unterhalt verdient hat, beschreiten „Neuland“ und sind gut unterhaltend, ohne „seicht“ zu sein. Das ist mal etwas ganz anderes als Schumann oder Brahms – die Musik bewegt sich eher am Übergang von klassisch-romantischer zur Unterhaltungsmusik.Philip Martin spielt diese „farbige“ Musik gekonnt, sensibel und liebevoll. Die Klangwiedergabe ist mustergültig. Nicht nur für Klavier-Fans empfehlens-/hörenswert!

Magnifique !
Pianiste virtuose dont l’oeuvre est imprégnée de ses nombreux voyages (quelle vie !), Gottschalk n’a pas la renommée des plus grands. Et pourtant, sa musique est magnifique, délicieusement éxotisante. Enregistrement bien servi par Philip Martin. À recommander.

Do you enjoy piano? Well here is a composer, once quite famous, now mostly forgotten, who needs to be rediscovered by the public. And thanks to Hyperion and pianist Philip Martin you can do this with a box set that will be played over and over because of the 8 CD's here, there is not a single one I could rate as less than excellent. The Composer, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, 1829-1869, was an American. Here is a New Orleans native who wrote hundreds of pieces, performing them himself in concerts mostly outside the US, and in writing, anticipated the works of Albeniz, Granados & Milhaud among others. He also anticipated ragtime by half a century! A complete booklet, a fascinating read,a fascinating life, accompanies the CD's but the music is the thing. 109 tracks of just gorgeous and entertaining music.This is really a treasure for anyone's collection. Don't even think about buying this one. Just get it. You will not regret.
