Spear & Jackson 9540B-91 Traditional Brass Back Tenon Saw

Ok so it's at the cheaper end but it's is great value. It comes sharp and will cut. To get the best out of it take some of the set off and reshope the handle and it now a good little workhorse that you can resharpen. I have 4 S&G saws and have done to this with all and they work for me.

Good traditional wooden handled tenon saw.

Works ok. Balanced and reasonably sharp. Handle a little small for my hand but is wood so it can be modified.

I am a fan of hand tools. A number of years ago I was looking for a tenon saw and had using Paul Sellers’ excellent web site for a guide, I found a few old, but quality saws on a popular auction site. These were old and not the sharpest but did a good job for a few years and I learned to make good straight cuts. The advantage of these over modern hardpoints is that they can be sharpened (if you have the tools -and currently I don’t sadly). More recently I made the mistake of buying a hardpoint Irwin Saw and my learned skills went out the window. Nothing I do can make it cut straight. Whilst it is sharp (ish), it’s also flimsy and just horrible to use. So I use it for quick rough cuts where it doesn’t matter (although to my brain it always matters). More recently I was browsing though a Paul Sellers Blog and he mentioned this particular saw. In my earlier searches for a tenon saw, I am fairly certain it wasn’t available on Amazon (or anywhere) so I was surprised to find it here. And the price is excellent. So I bought one, and it is almost perfect. It is sharp, it cuts straight (best cuts I have ever made) because its brass back is rigid, and it looks great. If you want a traditional hand saw to make things out of wood, which should last for a long long time with good care then invest in one of these. It won’t make you a perfect saw-er itself but it will give you every chance of success. Sounds a bit stupid but using this saw makes me happy. This is the smaller of two Spear and Jackson make and I’m planning to get the bigger one soon. Earlier I suggested it is almost perfect. The reason for the almost is my large hands. They make the handle of the saw slightly less comfortable that my older, blunter, saw. Bear this in mind if you have big hands, but it’s no reason not to buy it and love it. I needed a good saw for cutting tenons, and this saw works very well for that. The 15 teeth per inch are rip oriented, so it's perfectly suited. It's got quite a heft to it (it's a bit on the heavy side), which I like for this work. The brass back is substantial. I'm a fairly big guy, and the handle works very well for me. This could be because I learned to put three fingers (middle, ring, and pinky) in the handle and point my index finger alongside the handle for better sawing technique. The teeth are not hardened, so they can be resharpened. It's a little shorter than the previous saw I was using to cut tenons, but that seems fine to me. I just used it to cut some fairly large tenons on a piece of yellow pine, and it went very well.

Works well out of the box. Its seems well made and sturdy. ive been cutting tenons and it worked great, straight and a nice clean kerf. however i think its not to sharp, so you need to get it sharpened. The depth of cut is 3 inches.
