Genius line work
There are literally hundreds of examples of this artist's work online--on his blog, on Twitter, in YouTube flip-throughs of the sketchbooks that eventually become the printed volumes--so you can decide for yourself whether or not his line work is a thing of remarkable genius, or simply doesn't work for you. A previous reviewer mentioned Hal Foster, another comic-art master whose line work is best appreciated in b&w. I'm less impressed by Kim Jung Gi's pieces in colour, which is partly why I opted for this volume over one of the others--it shows a more developed style than the older books; there are fewer colour pieces, as far as I could tell, than the 2016 Sketchbook (or the graphic novel); and I liked what I saw of it in a YouTube flip-through. Two caveats: Some people might find part of the content objectionable, more for nudity than violence. Although the Omphalos volume is meant to be more explicit, the sketchbook collections sometimes hyper-sexualise women's bodies. This is something that turns me away from many comic artists, but, again, this is genius-level work, and a viewpoint very specific to the artist. and often transcends being just sexy body parts. I might compare him, in this aspect, to R. Crumb (whose work I don't like at all) or Brandon Graham (whose art I do find clever and skilled). Kim Jung Gi's ability to draw anything from any angle with absolute ease I would compare to Alitha Martinez. Caveat number two is that you can get a much better price for this through the artist's web site. They're sold out of some volumes, so eventually buying via Amazon might be the best source for this one too.
