Do the magnetics effect any hard drivers mechanical or solid state?

Nope, I use both hard drives, solid state Laptops and ones with regular hard drives. NO issues have been seen by any of my technicians

What does the surface of the unfolded shelf look like? How smooth and/or slippery is it?

It’s essentially a mouse pad. I use it quite a bit, never had any issues with my laptop sliding around.
