A lot of MSG. Enough for a life time.

I thought MSG was only sold to restaurants for some reason. It's not everyday you see MSG in the cupboards of Americans. I was watching the Best Food Review Channel with Sonny on Youtube and most of the recipes have MSG, so I did some research and all the old stories of MSG being bad for you have been disproven. All it is is a flavor enhancer built onto a salt molecule. I bought this MSG and added some to my spaghetti sauce and it turned out AMAZING, maybe some of the best batches I've ever made. I added too much sugar, so I know to add less next time, but adding MSG was like turning up the color and brightness of all the flavors. I am a convert and a true fan now. Go get yourself some MSG and impress your tastebuds.

MSG is a love it or hate it ingredient. Some people claim it gives them a headache, or makes them feel flush and odd. Certain studies have linked it to neurological disorders and obesity. Most people don't realize that they are eating it but is the reason that they crave Chinese food or restaurant dishes. It is also commonly used in canned foods, processed meats, etc. The Japanese call the flavour umami, which means it cannot be defined ... a mix of sour, sweet and salty ... kind of a 4th dimension in food. Some would call this savoury. Like a magic potion, it works on certain dishes and others it does not. As a flavour enhancer, it does a better job with foods that have some sweetness and acidity such as citrus-based sauces, tomato based sauces and ones which combine sugar and pepper or spices, which is why it is so commonly used in Chinese cooking. I bought this specifically as a steak marinade ... it's excellent with a little soy sauce, Worcestershire, sugar, onion and gravy master. It really brings out flavours that the ingredients alone lack and make for a fantastic steak marinade. A small sprinkle is all you need and most times you wouldn't be able to pick this out as an ingredient taste-wise until you wonder why the food tastes so good. On some foods, with more of one-note flavours, it doesn't do much. You wouldn't want to sprinkle this on ice cream. In a gravy, sauce or broth, it would do a lot better. My advice to anyone iffy on the health benefits would be to read up on it in health journals and articles. This is a vastly unregulated product, so for the most part, it is considered very safe but skeptics do paint a scary picture. This is a restaurant-sized portion, so it will last a long time ... don't use too much, only a sprinkle is needed in most recipes. You may suddenly wonder why your home cooking tastes a lot like restaurant food. This has been a hidden secret in many restaurant kitchens for quite some time. The quality is good on a hard to find product and the value is fantastic! If you know what this is and how to use it, by all means pick some of this up and make your food taste better.
