The throat is the part of the chimney just above the chimney opening and serves to connect the combustion chamber to the smoke chamber. The proper shape of the throat is granted the most critical part of the chimney. A properly designed chimney damper relieves the mason of the responsibility of designing the important throat. The throat should be long and narrow to make the fire burn evenly on the back wall. The throat should have a large cross-sectional area and a tall shape, and should have smooth side walls with as little friction as possible for smoke carried up the chimney. Most masons today do not attempt to design the throat. They prefer to use a chimney damper. The damper also allows the draft to be turned off during periods of non-use, conserving other sources of heat or air conditioning. It also allows regulation of the draft when the fireplace is in use. The chimney damper should be designed for permanence. Once it is installed in the masonry it is difficult to replace. The damper is exposed to direct heat from the fire. Cast iron is more heat resistant than steel. We recommend a cast iron damper for long life. The damper valve plate should be easily removed during construction, and when cleaning soot buildup from the smoke rack after extended use. The valve plate must be closed tightly. The operating mechanism must work smoothly and easily. Vestal chimney dampers meet the qualifications. The rear flange of the chimney damper should be protected from intense heat by being placed directly over and completely supported by the firebrick masonry of the rear wall. The chimney damper should not be constructed single at each end. Leave a minimum 1/4" gap between both ends of the chimney damper and the masonry to allow for expansion when heated.
