A Walk Among the Tombstones [DVD] [2014]

This one took its sweet time getting there but it slowly got under my skin and made an impression, making it a rewarding journey in the end.Liam Neeson is on good form with an intense brooding performance in an intense brooding film. He plays an ex cop who's now an unlicensed P.I who reluctantly takes on the case of a drug dealers kidnapped and murdered wife. The case proves to be less than straightforward (of course) with some sadistic serial killers involved.The pre credits sequence shows us Mr Neeson in full on Dirty Harry mode but from here the pace slows considerably - not in a bad way but it's worth noting this is a relatively slow moving mystery thriller. The film is populated by a series of undesirables - we start with our standard tortured "hero" and follow his path along the way through various dealers, addicts, weirdos, street kids and douche bag cops. There's just a little bit of heart and hope thrown in to prevent things from getting too relentlessly dark.Neeson is quality as you'd expect and the rest of the acting never falls below solid, even from the youngest of the cast. Director (and writer) Scott Frank tries hard to bring a bit of style, giving us some unique shots and moments. If you can take the deliberate pace and relative lack of explosive action then this amounts to a fine piece of work. Recommended from me.

There's a slight hint of SILENCE OF THE LAMBS in this tale of an ex-policman haunted by his past called upon to help the traffickers whose wives are being targeted by a sadistic gang of kidnappers. Liam Neeson strides through the process (literally and metaphorically) searching and finding the clues that lead to the final denouement. There's a decent crime plot here, with plenty of red herrings and a nasty ending. Good supporting cast and an excellent sense of location, New York but none of the obvious bits, but not for those with an aversion to the suggestion of gore.

Spoiler Alert.This could have been so much better. The initial plot was interesting enough and the unseen, unknown bad guys seemed suitably menacing. Bit like the shark in Jaws...the less you see of them the more scarey they are. Once you actually get to see them you quickly get bored with how unmenacing they are. There's no special reason they're targeting drug dealers that I can see...they're just a pair of not very smart, sociopathic, greedy nutjobs. They've just made a whole lot of money (400,000) and then take a pointless, big chance to meet up for some more when they should have just cut their losses and moved on to the next victim. The scene on the roof was unexpected and I'm thinking WOW the film is really going to take off (excuse the pun) now and get interesting from there, but it just didnt. There was too much talking and not enough action and the use of flashbacks didn't help, YAWN. The final scenes were just an excuse for some shootout action and didn't make any sense to me either. They find the bad guys through an action of one of the characters that's plain stupid and what follows in the house just continues the stupidness. If somebody had cut up my wife I wouldn't leave him handcuffed in a room on his own in a room full of potential weapons (kitchen) and then go wandering off around the rest of the house. Put a bullet or two in his head and THEN go wandering. Just plain stupid.It's worth watching if you like Liam, but instantly forgettable otherwise.

Great film lots of action but then i do like Liam neeson.I recommend you watch film you will not be bored.

This was an interesting attempt to bring the Matthew Scudder of the books to the big screen. I thought that Liam Neeson was a great choice for the charactor, he is big, intimidating and brooding which gave just enough tragedy and darkness to the performance.Dan Stevens was totally transformed from his time on Downton Abbey and this seems to be the kind of film where he is looking to do something different, i found his performance to be one of the better parts of the movie and look forward to seeing more of him.The story was fairly routine for a PI to investigate but was handled well and had a few unexpected moments thrown in.Overall i got a lot out of this film and would definately be interested in any more if they were made so i recommend it to all readers of crime fiction, or those who like noirish crime movies.

Liam Neeson....what a gritty actor he is! I confess to never having seen a poor action movie which features him.And this film is a wowser! Copious action throughout, and really pretty disturbing at times, featuring as it does a pair of heinous murdering kidnappers who have no qualms at killing and mutilating their victims, irrespective of age.It builds to a superb finale.5 stars are well deserved.
