Delicious but incredibly expensive
This is a review for Danodia pearl millet, currently priced at £18.99 for a 1kg bag. The millet comes in a paper/plastic packet, then in a plastic envelope. The cooking instructions on the packaging are fairly limited, just outlining how to cook it in a traditional pressure cooker or mill it into flour. This presumably reflects the usual South East Asian market of the product. I cooked it with roughly 2.5 times its volume of water and a bit of salt in a multi-cooker with a pressure cooker function for 10 minutes on high. I then let the pressure release naturally. This resulted in nice cooked separate grains with a bit of a bite. However, I will probably add on a couple of extra minutes next time I make this. The grains are delicious (much tastier than I expected) and very versatile. They could be used in place of any other small grain (e.g. rice) or starch (e.g. couscous). They would work well for hot or cold dishes (though couldn't be stored in the fridge for very long due to their large surface area). So, will I buy this product myself once I've used up the bag? Unfortunately, the answer is no. I've compared the price of this millet with other brands I've bought before and this one costs around three times as much per kilo. Even though it is tastier than those other brands, I don't think it is by enough to justify the price difference. We also grow quite a lot of millet in Europe, so it's hard to accept the additional air miles of flying in millet from India.

⭐☆☆☆☆ Disappointed – Wouldn't Cook No Matter What I Tried I really wanted to like finger millet, but unfortunately, my experience was frustrating. No matter how long I tried cooking it — stovetop or rice cooker — it just wouldn’t cook properly. I even followed the instructions on the bag exactly, but it remained hard and inedible. I gave it several attempts, hoping to make it work, but nothing helped. In the end, I had to throw out the entire bag, which was very disappointing. Maybe I got a bad batch, but this was a waste of time and money for me.

*Finger Millet Seeds: A tiny powerhouse for big flavor* These tiny finger millet seeds might not look like much, but they pack a serious nutritional punch! They have a slightly earthy flavor that adds depth to curries, salads, and even breakfast bowls. I love to toast them before using for an extra nutty crunch. While grinding your own flour is an option, these seeds are perfect for adding whole grain goodness to any dish.

I loved the taste of Danodia's ragi millet. I was not expecting that enough but this is really worth it. Quality of millet is amazing. Packaging also very good.

and small dead insects. this finger millet constituted one part of a 5-part prebiotic whole grain mixture that I had been taking in place of my daily steel-cut oats. once, while rinsing the grains before cooking, instead of running tap water over the grains through a sieve and down the drain of my kitchen sink, I decided to wash the mixture more thoroughly by submerging the grain mixture in a bowl of water while agitating the sieve. upon examining the rinse water, I discovered a lot of debris and some tiny dead insects. after individually testing 1T of each of the unmixed grains, it became clear that the finger millet had contaminated the entire mixture, as the other 4 grains (whole barley, rye berries, oat groats, and whole sorghum) tested clean. had to throw the whole thing out. what a waste!
