it does work!
Bought this for a burns supper and needed the butter to spread, last year I cut it in lumps, not pretty. I found this tool to work, took a little to work out, and get the angle right, but it worked great. The butter was more strips than curls but thin enough to spread.

Practice needed
It took a bit of practice to get the hang of butter curls...slightly allow butter to get nearer to room temp as straight from fridge may help.
