Besides being gorgeous to look at, it performs its functions to a tee!
This Japanese Incense Holder is so beautiful, the pictures don't do it justice! I'm quite happy to have foun it and it is a perfect complement to my new fondness of Japanese high end Incense sticks, including the kyara wood based ones. It holds the sticks in place very well and the box retains all the ashes. It arrived impressively well-packed, after all it is ceramic and it is Japanese made (they are known to never cut corners!). And I'm quite happy with the absolutely lovely incense it came with, and will purchase again from the CEREMONY Store. Did I mention how beautiful this incense holder is!? :o)

Perfect for my use - very safe!
Update 7.29.2024: After trying the lever style, I decided to also buy the stainless-steel mesh style in the same Amazon listing. The mesh platform style does not have the lever. I found this mesh style allows 100% of Japanese incense to burn, no waste, no left-over pieces. So that is a nice benefit. For those who use Satya brand incense that has a bamboo core, I was able to burn Earth Satya BNG Nag Champa incense sticks on the mesh platform. Full length Satya incense sticks fit fine without any modification. If you run into an issue where the incense sticks want to roll over to the side of the holder, simply bend the stainless-steel platform, using great care to create a very slight valley in the middle lengthwise for the incense stick to lay in. This prevents the incense from accidentally rolling to the side and extinguishing.Original comments Lever style: I really like the lever style holder. It is the best I have found for burning Japanese/Asian incense that does not have a bamboo core. Initially I tried tweaking the position of the metal lever to get the incense properly positioned, but then I noticed a comment in the listing that I had missed...which essentially said to twist or roll the incense stick until it is positioned in the center of the holder. So instead of adjusting the lever, I now take a second to twist or roll the incense stick using 2 fingers until the incense stick is not touching the bottom, sides, or lid. I am able to burn the incense with the lid on and I have never had to relight. No need to tweak the lever.Using the included flame-retardant fabric strip: Lay the strip of fabric (BLACK SIDE UP) inside the ceramic base. So as not to waste any of a short 2.75” Shoyeido incense stick I lit the incense stick, then laid the incense directly on the black side of the fabric strip (inside the ceramic holder). I was bit nervous about placing a burning incense stick directly on the fabric, but it worked perfectly - the entire Japanese incense stick burned, no left-over bits, no strange odor - nor did I notice any singeing of the fabric. I used the included brush to sweep the ash off the flame-retardant fabric strip (black side) and it looks good as new. That was Japanese incense that I used in that experiment burning directly on the flame-retardant fabric strip. Japanese incense does not have a bamboo core.Next, I went through the same exercise, laying an incense stick flat inside the ceramic holder, but without using the fabric strip, and that did not work, the incense did not burn, so the fabric strip must be used if you want to burn the incense lying flat inside (without using the lever). Now that I learned what to do, and the various ways this incense burner/holder can be used I purchased 3 more of these lever style incense holders for use around the house. I think I am also going to buy one that has the stainless-steel mesh to compare. I will reserve the one with the stainless-steel mesh for use with these very short incense sticks. In my opinion these ceramic incense holders/burners are the safest since I can burn the sticks with the lid on. I no longer worry about accidentally knocking burning incense off the holder and causing a fire. I love this incense holder. I purchased both the brown and green colors and would love to see a red color offered.

Great
Bought this for my partner. He loves it. Should pay attention to the measurements, especially if you’re planning on putting regular sized incense into the holder. It might not fit. The ones that come with it fit perfectly though.

Worth it
Looks great, matches my brown deck furniture. The metal might need adjusted up or down since most incense sticks are never perfectly straight which causes them to touch the bottom and fizzle out.

Missing a part in mine; small defect inside
Did not come with the grill nor the nice brush, the white cheap thing others have shown. I'm am unhappy about it the grill not being in mine and don't know if one just didn't get packed in (by accident) a batch of the boxes or at least just my box or if they quit including that. The part holding the incense is not glued in straight, it's not bad but does annoy me to look at and if the incense stick is not perfectly straight (stick is warped even a little), I then have to put it in just right so it doesn't press against the side due to that piece not being glued in straight. The incense it comes with does smell quit good and comes in nice tubes but can't tell you what the aroma names are because on the writing on the tubes is all Chinese (pretty to see, impossible for me to read).I think I got all the parts except the grill that is not in my box. I got the container with lid which is not wood like I thought (should had read closer), it's pottery clay so don't drop it. I also got the felt strip, 2 tubes of incense sticks, tweezers, and brush. It's got a heft to it, a good weigh so that is good to help keep sitting in place but also means it will be broken in even a short fall but my wooden one broke in a short fall too though not as bad as this would so I was able to glue the wooden one back. It also has 2 good size round holes on bottom, one at each end, that seem to have purpose. Maybe to mount on the wall???This would be 4, maybe 5 stars, if my grill had been included as it seems it should have. No papers with this to give any info, even box is plane brown with nothing written on it. I would just return it for an exchange but a cheap incense container holder is not worth the hassle of boxing this back up and driving out to UPS store and waiting all over again for another that I don't know if it will be missing something too or have the piece inside also glued in crooked.

better quality than expected
The media could not be loaded. i was unsure of the quality when ordering this but honestly once i got it, there is weight to it and it feels made of heavy material. its ceramic/metal i think. i use the satya nag champa incense sticks and it fits perfectly on the metal rack inside. burns great and mine did not burn out or anything. the soot does collect on the lid but thats expected so i did go with the darker color because i knew that would happen. only thing i would love to see in a future model of this is an incense holder drawer. i recommend, its good value for the price. keeps the ashes hidden away in an aesthetic design. havent tried the tools or incense that came with but its a nice bonus!
