HSK Standard Course 4A - Textbook (English and Chinese Edition)

Although the book came within two days of ordering it, I initially gave this seller a bad review because there was no CD accompanying the book as described in the product description or shown in a customer image. Apparently, the publisher is no longer providing CD's with new books; however, there is a QR code on the back of the book (mine was under the removable UPC label) that is supposed to be scanned to load the audio files on your phone. I've provided a screen shot to show that they are actually available on my phone. I just need to save them on my phone so I don't have to scan each time I want to listen to a dialogue or figure out how to get them on my computer. The seller was quite apologetic.

The new standard course books are very focused '''''and the companion practice books make this a knock out suite. Both the lesson book and the practice book come with audio accompaniment. The lesson books are arranged very similar to modern non-native speaker Chinese classroom texts. Each unit has a theme. The units contain warm up exercises, several short dialog, with practice drills and classroom activities. There are also suggestions for essay topics and a few cultural notes along the way. The back of the book also has a list of all vocabulary covered during the lesson. Level 4 has no translations outside of the explanations on grammatical use and context. There are, however pinyin translations for the dialog sections. For the price, I think this book is a good investment.

I buyed this book because i want to study chinese every day in order to pass the hsk exams!!!!

This is probably the most boring Chinese language textbook I've ever had the misfortune of enduring. The texts are all painfully didactic, like Chicken Soup but without any trace of soul. If you're fine with studying conversations where people unironically tell each other about how money doesn't buy happiness (chapter 10 text 3) or how one should change their mindset rather than complaining about things they can't change (chapter 8 text 3) as if these were earth-shattering insights, then this is the book for you. I imagine this book is probably the most useful if your main goal is to pass the HSK, especially with the practice tests that the workbook provides. If the HSK is only incidental or unnecessary to you, however, stay far away from this book and pick up something like the Princeton series instead. If you must use this book, however, Chinese Zero to Hero offers a nice self-study companion series that outlines vocabulary and grammar points more clearly than the explanations provided in the book. (However, I will say that the two-star review complaining about the lack of pinyin is BS - the texts do in fact come with pinyin, they're just printed separately. At this level, pinyin above characters will only hobble your progress.)

Beware! There is absolutely no pinyin to support the reading of Chinese characters.
