Great little shovel
I've wanted one of these for decades, and when I saw that it now comes with a nice sheath, I had to get one. It comes fairly sharp, but remember that if it had a razor edge the edge would chip when using using it for its primary purpose-digging. To me, the chopping capability is for emergency use. If you are going camping, bring a proper chopping tool like a hatchet or machete/kukri etc. If you are planting a garden at your home, get a real shovel. This is an entrenching tool, bring the right tool for the job.I got it for the truck in case I get stuck, and for this kind of use it's great. I have no need of something that folds up like an E-tool for this purpose so I like the solid construction; no rivets, joints, or threaded sleeves to fail or loosen. I can clear snow or dirt, and use the edge to chop branches to place under the tires for traction. I have many Cold Steel products since the early 90's (when they were a super expensive knife brand using Seki steel from Japan) and they are very good even though a lot of their products are just stamped steel now. The handle on this is the same as on their "Bad Axe" and is very strong. And yes, it could make a pretty effective weapon in a pinch. Would recommend.

Saved my son in laws life!
Out in the middle of nowhere camping in a tent by himself. Bear snuck up on him and he was actually able to get away with just a couple of scratches because we had just bought this for him for Christmas and he had it on him! Bear ran away after a couple of hits with this sharp bugger!

A must for DIY landscapers and outdoorsmen.
This thing cuts through hard-packed soil and thick roots like they were not there. It is a must for taking out old shrubs and other plantings. While it sees a lot of use in the yard, it also is stashed in the SUV for use while camping and off-road exploring. It is tiny powerhouse. My only regret is that I waited so long to get one.

One tough mutha!
I got this to keep in my truck. Needed something small but it needed to be tough. Something that I could rely on. Well, this fits exactly what I needed. My friends couldn't believe the build quality on this and siad they wanted one for themselves. Nice job Cold Steel.

The best of the best
Very durable and a must have for campers. Good for fishing if you need to dig up worms, for leveling out your campsite, etc. We've used it a few camping trips now, totaling a few weeks all together and we have seen no signs of this being a poor quality shovel. Would definitely recommend. Got this on sale for $23.

It’s a great shovel.
It’s a nice shovel. I’ve used entrenching tools for years for digging around water services in a ditch when a big shovel won’t fit. I prefer this shovel to the newer folding US tools.I do strip the varnish by scraping it with a knife then sanding. I then and put several coats of a linseed finish on the handle. Easier on the hands.I have one in each car too. It’s handy. Used it to chip away snow when my dad drove up on a snow bank and got stuck. It sharpens easy. I do put some oil on the exposed metal to stop rust. Some people throw them like an axe but I am a klutz in that department.I’m sure it’s a heck of a weapon but I would not know. Only thing I’ve ever put in the ground with this shovel is some geraniums and a nice basil plant.
