A Poem for Every Day of the Year

Beautiful dust jacket
I have enjoyed most poems that I have read. I love the concept of poetry every day. I was disappointed that the beautiful illustrations are only on the dust jacket and only back and white ones for each month. Just something I wish I would have been aware of when making my decision.

Perfect read aloud for my homeschooled kids
We read a poem every morning and we really like this! Has a great combination of fun and thoughtful poems. I like the little excerpt above each poem making a note about the author or what the poem is about. Very beautiful cover!

Great variety
My whole family loves this collection of poems. The small tidbits of facts make it a perfect enrichment for our homeschool family.

A great gift!
I bought this for a friend as a birthday present, and she loved it! I marked several important dates, and it was really beautiful how some of the poems perfectly fit the personality of someone whose birthday it is, etc.The poems are seasonal, and include holidays, liturgical seasons, available pastimes that time of year, etc. Truly a well-done anthology!

a great way to begin your day
I love this book. I have it at my dining table and read the poem of the day while I eat breakfast. It starts the day on such a high note. The poem is well edited, with a brief introduction to each selection. I have encountered some of my favorites, and been exposed to several new poems. I highly recommend.

Delightful
I listen to these every day on my way to work and on my way home. Some make me laugh and I love those and some make me cry and then I wonder if I should listen while driving. Poetry touches the soul and Allie Esiri chooses the right combination for each month. Listening to Helena and Simon reading is the best.

Fantastic book!
I loved this poetry book. Each day's poem is relevant to the season and month and such a great across the board variety! It has more than exceeded my expectations. I plan on giving this as a gift to all my friends!

A lovely way to begin the day
A wonderful collection of poems with a short informative introduction for each.I now begin my morning with coffee, the day’s verse. . . followed by the newspaper.

Not very cheery
I bought this to read to my 8yo & 10yo every morning. It's a beautiful book, and I do like the poems BUT an awful lot of them are very depressing and/or political. This mornings offering about Malala being shot in the head by the Taliban was just bit much to explain at 7am... the lighthearted poems are few and far between.

The most beautiful thing!
(This mini-review may appear elsewhere under the name "Amy McLean" or "Amy McLean - Super Ink Arts")Allie Esiri's A Poem for Every Day of the Year is one of the most splendid books I've ever held. As one would expect, it features one poem for every day of the year; this much I'd expected, but when the book arrived I was delighted to find that each date features a short paragraph either about the poem or about any special occasions or events that can be marked on that day. This was a lovely touch that I hadn't expected, and the illustrations inside are as delicious as this hardback book's cover artwork. There's a great range of poets and poems inside, some very famous poems and artists, some lesser-known poems of famous writers, and some works I'd never heard of. I'd like to have the willpower to savour one poem one day at a time and make this last me all 366 days (yes, it covers 29th February!) but it's far too tempting for that. I can't wait to explore the poems some more, and then it'll be onto A Poem for Every Night of the Year. Thank you Macmillan for creating such a gorgeous publication!

Lovely anthology that in the main is child friendly
I saw this book in Waterstones and instantly fell in love with it. Cheaper and delivered to the door made my choice of purchase obvious. This book comes after the partner book "A Poem for every night of the Year". The book is, in the main, child friendly (maybe 7+) , but prepare for lots of conversations for some of them and they're probably more read to children rather than read by them. Content is a little trickier than the night book. Lovely range of silliness to quite serious topics from a broad spectrum of poets meaning you can expose yourself and your children to appropriate poetry choices that you may never have read before. The book is a lovely reminder of the importance of poetry and challenging language experienced by children growing up.Having a poem a day means that you can always get some guidance for what to read. There are very well and simply written introductory paragraphs for each daily entry that help provide context for the choice.Open a page and you get a wash of contentedness having read the choice for the evening. A great read at any time of the day to delve into and explore whatever the date.

Lovely reading for all ages - a little moment in the day to think.
This was bought for my partner and she reads it to us both daily. It’s informative, thought provoking and lovely. It has the added bonus of stopping us looking at our mobile phones and step into another world.. wide variety of poetry from early to modern poets. It’s a little ray of sunshine each morning before we throw ourselves into this frenetic life.

Wonderful book for all ages.
Fantastic book. Thank you Allie Esiri - you have sorted Christmas presents for several friends, as this book has a partner - Poem for every night of the year. A real mix of poetry with a short resume of why the poem was chosen for that specific day. Can’t recommend it too highly.
