How durable are these, considering they're just made of cardboard? Don't they tear up pretty quickly?

I have 2 cats and the board is holding up good, just as the ones you get at other stores. I suggest when you flip the board that you get off as much loose cardboard as you can to save a mess on the floor. As of now I haven't had to flip it over.

Does this leave bits of cardboard everywhere?

It leaves bits of cardboard which to me is better than bits of furniture.

How do I use the catnip that came with it?

Sprinkle a bit of cat nip on the scratcher. Whole bag is not necessary. Kitty will love the scratcher

Does it file their nails down when they scratch them?

No it doesn't. This and all cat scratching pads are not meant to dull the nails but rather to direct the cat's natural scratching onto something harmless, instead of on your furniture.
