Overlooked 70's western gem
Dennis Hopper stars as the young outlaw trying to 'go straight'. He hits town, gets a job, makes new friends (and enemies of course)while events and people, unfold around him.Being the 1970's, this is not a standard shoot em up, but more a revisionist western typical of the decade. However it is not bleak and gritty like McCabe and Mrs Miller, for example. This is something far more upbeat in it's tone.It is a rare thing in a western to be a realistic character study yet still retain a sense of fun. There is a comic thread that runs throughout which never ventures into silliness, but is more in the realms of a mature caper film. For some reason, i expected it to be more violent and serious. What i didn't expect was to have such a good time watching it, while still getting all my deeper boxes ticked.A light hearted film with brains and soul. And Warren Oates is great value, as always.Plus it's great to see a western touched by the very early days of flight, which also provides the funniest moment i've seen on film for some time.
