Dancer in the Dark

I am absolutely in Love with Björk. I adore pretty much ALL of her music, and it took me a long, LONG time to watch this film. First time was February 14 2026. She is absolutely excellent in this, and very believable. She is a fine actress. I have seen her in "The Northman", and though it is a fine film, it does not showcase her talent. This film really, REALLY does. I almost instantly became attached to her character Selma. I don't think that I have ever been so emotionally drawn to a character as I was to Selma. I wanted to jump into the movie to help her. It's very rare these days to go into film that where you know what the outcome is from word of mouth, but yet you just can't prepare for it. And this was no exception. I cried so much I feel traumatized. Knowing definitely does not prepare your emotions for this one. I think that sometimes when I watch particular films a second time, I tend to hope that I somehow got it wrong the first time, hoping for a different outcome on the second go. It almost makes me want a seperate edition for this one, with the happy ending... I know... It's crazy! This one is going to sting for a while I suspect. How someone that is supposed to be her friend just takes advantage of her disability is absolutely gutting, especially being a friend. Just so emotional. For whatever reason, I am drawn to movies that hit my emotions like this. This is BY FAR the saddest movie I have ever seen. This one makes me want to go find Björk and just hold her and cry. I will say, though, that I am glad to have seen Björk absolutely nail a role like this.

This is one of the most depressing, bleak, overwhelming and totally unforgettable films I've ever seen that have an execution scene and lots of avant garde music by Bjork (who's also the star!?) and just about every style of dance you can think of (no break dancing thank God).How many movies have you seen that have that same overused plot? Well I guess I really can't think of any! Look, if you're a fan of Lars von Trier you've already seen this brilliant film. If you're not a fan I don't know why? Unless you're one of those oddball people who actually (I'm not making this up) think Tyler Perry is talented! If you are one of those poor souls and cursed to watch nothing but movies like "Top Gun Part 13" , "Avatar Part 4 ( the butterflies without human faces) and every other piece of crap that Hollywood spews out than I truly feel sorry for you but that doesn't mean that I want to hang out with you. Also, Bjork gives an absolutely fantastic performance and her music is haunting.

Selma Going blind is one thing, but her going blind and raising a son that will lose his sight someday, too, without an operation to correct his vision when he turns 13 is tragic. So, Selma-Gene's Mother-works a factory job, saves as much of the little bit of money she makes for his operation. Then there is the desperation of her neighbor/friend. He is a Police Officer, Washington State 1964 era, he is getting ready to lose everything he has including his wife. Learning that Selma is losing her vision creates a demon in his mind, after asking her for a loan, and she says "this money is Gene's". He threatens to kill himself. Selma has a loving positive angle on life, no matter how bad things get she still has her imagination and her Musicals-where nothing tragic ever happens. He finds where Selma hides her money and then waits for her to leave, steals it and puts it in his steel box, so his wife can see him counting it and feel proud. Selma is forced to do something that she would never have dreamt of, but it is for the love of her son she is thinking at this point, nothing else. Throughout the movie she has these visions of people dancing around her, she is the center of a musical, it is a magical and inspirational movie. Everytime something went wrong she would simply go into her own world and daydream about her entire life as a musical. This loving mother from Chechlslovokia? does everything she can to provide for her son, has a nice guy that eventually falls in love with her. But she has no time for a boyfriend. I think she gives in to that later, though. The dancers are excellent, the Directing of this film is superb. No matter what Selma goes through she still comes through with a smile on her face. Very inspirational. Bjork is great acting in this one.

I regard this as one of the greatest movies of all time. The performances are astonishing, the story gripping the bleak, and the musical numbers almost surreal.

A neat musical drama about perseverance and power of imagination. The director is known for making weird edgy movies.

I put off watching this for 20 something years because I knew this movie was depressing and TBT, I am not always in the mood for a depressing movie these days. That said, I am a big fan of Bjork and LVT. Gotta say that the movie was really well done and was also as depressing as I imagined... but in a very good way. Bjork truly is a genius in her own right and I think these kinds of stories do highlight the evil in people and the pure optimism in the face of that. Not everyone in life has everything in the cards for them and Selma certainly didn't. But... the sacrifice she makes is what adds to the tear jerker of a film's greatness. If you have a heart, this movie will certainly tug on it.

Video quality was terrible. I Ione the movie but this rental was a rip off since I could barely see it was distorted and poor quality.

Got this for my wife. She loves this movie for some reason. It's beyond depressing, but very well made.

I first became aware of this movie while watching another movie in a theatre; a trailer of Dancer In The Dark was played and I remember being impressed by it. I didn't remember more but it was enough that, when I saw the title advertised on Amazon, I bought the DVD. This is a story almost shot as a documentary from the protagonist's point-of-view until it segues into the fantasy of a musical. At various points through the story we see Bjork singing her heart out while the character lapses into how her life could be choreographed. That said, the real story is anything but happy. Director Lars von Trier, who's currently seeking to release the movie Melancholia, has formed a brilliantly original critique about the limits of our judicial system when trying to get at "the truth" of a person's guilt or innocent. Lars Von Trier et Björk ont en commun de repousser sans cesse les limites de leur art, et mieux, l'authenticité. Ni l'un ni l'autre ne se protège dans leurs œuvres. Il fallait que ces deux-là se rencontrent, et pas seulement pour une BOF absolument sublime. Qui aurait deviné que Björk jouerait si juste sinon le père Von Trier qui sortait du tournage des "Idiots" et plus lointain, de Der Riget (The Kingdom, diffusé sur Arte sous le titre "L'Hôpital et ses fantômes", chef d'œuvre complet). Ce n'est pas, et pardon pour l'amazonaute qui a initié les commentaires, à mon sens, un film sur la peine de mort. Ou vraiment si peu. Car il y a meurtre, et l'on comprend ce meurtre...On regrette que ce meurtre soit sanctionné par la peine de mort, soit d'ailleurs sanctionné tout court, car Selma est en légitime défense pour son fils... C'est un film sur le sacrifice. Pas le martyre au sens chrétien, sinon Lars Von Trier n'aurait pas fait commettre de meurtre à l'héroïne. C'est une âme pure soudain confrontée à la lâcheté qui mène au vol, lâcheté qui mène à la perversion. Von Trier clôt avec ce film sa trilogie "Cœur d'or" entamée avec "Breaking the Waves" (fantastiques Emily Watson, et Katherine Cartlidge, trop tôt disparue), suivie des "Idiots", et se terminant -et comment- par "Dancer in the Dark".Le don de soi absolu, au-delà de la morale, par amour pour son fils, pour le sauver de la cécité, puisqu'elle-même se sait condamnée, déjà, car elle devient aveugle et ne pourra plus bientôt travailler. Cvalda (Catherine Deneuve, dans son meilleur rôle) est bien là pour la soutenir, pour partager son amour du chant et rendre poétique l'usine moribonde qui les emploie. Il y a bien l'amour d'un homme qui vient enfin illuminer sa vie. Mais son fils ne peut attendre le bonheur de sa mère. Il doit être opéré. Sans pathos aucun, brutalement, comme un uppercut, comme un coup dans le sternum, Björk incarne jusqu'à la mort de son personnage avec une intensité d'actrices de la trempe de Romy Schneider (La Banquière...Garde à vue...et on lui souhaite un plus doux destin, et plus long!) ou Sandrine Bonnaire ("Sans toit ni loi", "Jeanne la Pucelle" de J. Rivette), ou Ingrid Bergman, Jane Mac Teer (La Dame en Noir, Albert Nobbs), Glenn Close dans "Albert Nobbs", Helena Bonham Carter, Emily Watson ("Breaking the waves" de Von Trier, "Angela's Ashes", "Cheval de Guerre"), Natalie Portman dans Black Swan, Mélanie Laurent dans "Inglorious Basterd", "Je vais bien, ne t'en fais pas", et j'en oublie. Elle est spontanée, elle est réellement possédée par son personnage. On comprend ensuite qu'elle ne veuille plus jouer au cinéma.Car elle ne joue pas dans ce film, Von Trier ne joue pas au cinéaste. Pour lui c'est un acte sacré, et il est prêt à tout pour vous retourner le cœur et vous demander ensuite si vous en avez encore un.

Den Film "Die Fahrraddiebe" von Vittoria de Sicca aus dem Jahre 1948 habe ich mit 10 bis 12 Jahren gesehen, es war bisher der einzige Film, der mich zu Tränen gerührt hat. Björk als "Dancer In The Dark" hat mir gegen Ende die Augen erstmals wieder glitzern lassen. Lars von Triers Film von 2000 handelt von Selma Jezkova (Björk), einer alleinerziehenden Mutter, die in den 60ern aus der Tschechoslowakei in die USA gekommen ist.Sie hat eine Erbkrankheit, an der sie bald erblinden wird, und das Schicksal will sie ihrem Sohn ersparen. Trotz schon erheblicher Sehminderung arbeitet sie in einer Fabrik an einer Metallpresse, an der aus Blechen Waschbecken geformt werden. Sie gönnt sich und ihrem Jungen nichts, legt jeden Dollar und Cent beiseite, um dem Jungen bald eine OP bezahlen zu können, ehe es zu spät dafür ist. Eine liebe Freundin hat sie in der Mittvierzigerin Kathy (Catherine Deneuve), die manchmal Fehler aufgrund Selmas zunehmender Sehbehinderung verhütet, und schließlich hängt Selma noch eine Nachtschicht an. Da sie aber schon mehrfach die Maschine "geschrottet" hat, muss der Vorarbeiter ihr die Kündigung überreichen. Ihr Vermieter Bill Houston (David Morse), der ihr einen Wohnwagen auf dem Grundstück seines Hauses vermietet hat, steckt ebenfalls in finanziellen Nöten, der Polizist hat sich für die Ansprüche seiner Frau Linda (Cara Seymour) verschuldet, ihm droht der Verlust seines Hauses. Beide vertrauen sich ihre Sorgen an, einen Kredit kann Selma, die 2000 und wenige Dollar und 1o cent in einer Pappdose hinter dem Bügelbrett im Wandschrank versteckt hat, nicht geben, da der OP-Termin dringend ist. Deshalb stiehlt er das Geld, nachdem er die fast blinde Frau beim Verstecken heimlich beobachtet hat. Selma stellt ihn zur Rede, bei einer Rangelei um die Börse mit ihrem Geld verletzt sie ihn unbeabsichtigt mit seiner Dienstwaffe, und da er offensichtlich lieber sterben als das Geld preisgeben will, muss Selma zu drastischeren Mitteln greifen. Auch aufgrund von Falschaussagen wird sie zum Tode durch den Strang verurteilt, eine Revision mit einem neuen Anwalt, für die sich Cathy eingesetzt hat, lehnt Selma ab, da sie der Anwalt das Ersparte für die OP, die sie schon in die Wege geleitet hat, kosten würde, zum Entsetzen und Wut von Cathy. Selma stirbt durch Erhängen, glücklich! Lars von Trier hat großartige Darsteller für seinen Film gewinnen können. Neben Catherine Deneuve überzeugend wie so oft sehen wir Peter Stormare als Jeff, einen zurückhaltenden Mann, der Selma für sich gewinnen möchte, David Morse als Polizisten und Dieb, der seine Rolle in der Zerrissenheit zwischen schlechtem Gewissen wegen der Tat und andererseits Schutz seiner Fanilie und seines bedrohten Besitzes vorzüglich spielt, des weiteren Udo Kier als Augenarzt, Stellan Skarsgard als Arzt und Paprika Steen als Kollegin in der Nachtschicht. Ein absoluter Glücksgriff ist die Bestzung von Selma mit der 35jährigen isländischen sehr vielseitigen Sängerin Björk in ihrer ersten Filmrolle, und sie zeigt eine überwältigende Vorstellung, mit Recht mit der Goldenen Palme, dem Europäischen Filmpreis und einer Oscarnominierung belohnt, und für mich sind diese Würdigungen wertvoller als mancher Oscar z.Bwie die, die Di Caprio und Jennifer Lawrence erhielten, beide hätten ihn für andere als die prämierten Rollen bekommen müssen. Björk mit ihrer Brille und ihrem meist etwas verstrubbelten Haaren wirkt wie ein kleines gerupftes Vögelchen, das man einfach liebhaben muss und beschützen will. Sie ist eine tragische Figur, sie hat ein Kind bekommen (von wem und und unter welchen Umständen bleibt offen), seit ihrer Kindheit von der drohenden Blindheit wissend, und neben ihrer fantastischen Mutterliebe mag auch ein Stück schlechtes Gewissen stecken, so dass sie sich jetzt abrackert und lieber stirbt als blind ewig in Haft zu sitzen, während der Sohn ebenfalls erblindet. Auch der Polizist ist eine zerrissene Persönlichkeit. Aus Liebe und auch aus Schwäche hat er sich überschuldet und sieht keinen anderen Ausweg als den Diebstahl, um Heim und Ehe zu retten, er verhält sich bei dem Kampf um das Geld einerseits uns wegen unseres Mitleides mit Selma abstoßend, zeigt aber zugleich, welch Seelenqualen ihm seine Tat bereitet, ganz hervorragend auch von ihm gespielt während des heimlichen Ausspähens von Selmas Versteck und im selbstmörderischen Festhalten des Geldes nach dem versehentlich gelösten Schuss, Selma sieht nur das Geld und das Drohen, dass ihr Sohn nicht operiert werden kann, eine phantastische Vorstellung sowohl von Björk als auch von David Morse. Wer Filme von Lars von Trier wie "Melancholia", "Antichrist" und "Nymphomaniac" (die beiden letzten mit der umwerfenden Charlotte Gainsbourg) kennt, weiß, das Lars von Trier das Publikum nicht schont und gradlinig seine Ideen durchsetzt, und mit ihm und Björk sind zwei starke Persönlichkeiten aufeinandergetroffen, sehenswert die Interviews mit beiden. Björk hat Songs für den Film geschrieben, wir sehen wiederholt Tagtraumszenen von Selma, die als Musicals gestaltet sind, die erblindende Frau liebt dieses Genre und besucht mit Kathy mehrmals das Kino mit entsprechenden Filmen, lässt sich von der Freundin die Bilder erklären,. Diese wunderbaren Einschübe von Selmas Phantasien zeigen sie singend und mit Kollegen in der Fabrik tanzend, mit dem Verehrer und Arbeitern auf einen langsam fahrenden Zug mit Niederbordwaggons, im Gericht und sogar in Haft und auf dem Weg zur Hinrichtung. Im ersten Moment mögen diese Szenen irritieren, bis man merkt, das sie einen Bezug zu Selmas Befindlichkeit haben und ganz und gar nicht deplatziert sind! Und diese Szenen, ob von Lars von Trier so beabsichtigt oder nicht, lockern die bestürzende Stimmung und Lage, die der Film schonungslos zeigt, etwas auf: Wir sehen den Zusammenhang mit der Handlung, bei der Selma in diese Tagtraumszenen fällt, gleichzeitig verschaffen sie uns aber auch eine Art Atempause, ohne sie wäre dieses erschütternde Drama mit Sicherheit noch schwerer zu verdauen gewesen. Und wie anfangs gesagt stirbt Selma glücklich, singend, weil sie eine Botschaft schon mit der Schlinge um den Hals bekommen hat, dass ihr Leiden und Tod nicht vergebens gewesen sind. Mal wieder habe ich mich über die Einstufung unserer Wächter über das seelische Wohl unserer Kinder (FSK 12 !) gewundert, Kinder und Jugendliche unter 16 Jahren sollten den Film nur zusammen mit volljährigen Bezugspersonen sehen. Besonders Björks Darstellung und dieser Film gehören für mich zu den GROSSARTIGSTEN Kinoerlebnissen aller Zeiten. Doc Halliday

昔から同作品が好きで、その後年齢を重ねた後で今回DVDを改めて購入し観てみました 同作品は、レビューを見ても、他サイトでもコメントや感想を見ても、 やはり 好き、嫌いがはっきり分かれています その理由も解ります ただしこの作品は 一度観ただけでは、主人公や登場人物の置かれている立場や背景を理解するのは難しい気がします 某Youtubeでこの作品に関して批判、もしくは感想を述べていらっしゃったタレントさんがいましたが ストーリーはおろか、内容自体把握せずにコメントをしているという印象でした 「何で目が不自由なのに、列車のレールを歩いて行くの？危ないじゃない！」 というコメントをされていた方もいました 主人公であるセルマは、先天性で目が不自由であるのと同時に、 物語の中盤からほぼ目が見えない状態になっています なので、 列車のレールを目印に歩いて行けば、迷う事なく自宅のトレーラーに帰れるという事なのですが 批判されるのはご自由ですが、 映画はどんな作品でも、一度、二度観ただけで良し悪しを決めるには無理があります 自分もそうでしたから良く解ります・・・ なので、 「映画評論家」と称するタレントさんのコメントには正直感銘を受ける事が少ないです 年齢を重ねてみて、改めてこの作品に向き合って観た感想ですが セルマだけが被害者のように見えますが、実はセルマを取り囲む登場人物全てが、 「お金」に支配された資本主義社会の被害者であるという事です 監督がアンチハリウッドという事だけではなく、 資本主義社会では、資金を巡って犠牲になる人達が沢山います いくら、「仲間 友達」とは言っても、この世界は資金が無いと仲間すらも裏切る もしくは 裏切ざるを得ない セルマは警官である知人を事故により発砲し、その後は最悪の結果になります 警官である男性知人も楽になりたかったのでしょうが、 嘘までつき、お金を盗む 愛する妻の為には、たとえ拳銃で何発も撃たれても最後まで盗んだお金をセルマに渡さなかった セルマは当然、努力して貯めたお金ですから、無理やりにでも取り返そうとします 息子が健常者であれば、そもそもこんな事にはならかった しかし その原因はセルマ自身にあるとセルマ本人は罪の意識に囚われている 「何でそんな事を思う必要があるの？」 と一般の健康的な人達がセルマに対して疑問に感じるのは当然でしょう そもそも、セルマに感情移入出来ないのは当然です 最愛の友人である、同じ工場で働いていた女性も セルマの死刑を何とか阻止する為にセルマが貯金したお金で弁護士費用を工面しようとした 友人である彼女自身も、決して裕福でもなければ ましてや自由に生きている訳ではない この映画は、この世界の人間社会の縮図を綺麗事無しに描いています 自分はこの作品は後世に残すべき価値のある作品であると感じています この作品は1964年のアメリカが舞台になっていますが 21世紀を迎えた現代でも現実社会は楽ではなく、 全ての人が苦労を虐げられています 皆不自由であり、不平等の中で生活をしています だからこそ、その中にはロマンがあり、 空想や幻想 人を大事にしたいという想いが生まれる その空想の象徴である、「ミュージカル」の演出は本当に見事です 音楽も素晴らしいですし、ダンスの演出にも無駄がありません もしこの世界が不自由ではない綺麗な世の中だったとして、 人類は娯楽や音楽 そして 「何かを産み出したい」という強い想いが果たして生まれてくるのでしょうか そして 人間の「最低限の文化的な価値観」を守っていけるのでしょうか セルマは最後に、友人でもあり、最愛の男性から 「何故ジーンを産んだ？」と問われた時に 「自分の赤ちゃんを抱きたかった」と言っています セルマはミュージカルスターであり、女性なのです ～最後に～ この「ダンサーインザダーク」こそ 観ている人に色々な事を考えさせる映画はありません ただただ、 「悲しい映画 暗い映画 最悪のクライマックス」 で終わらせるのは、あまりにも短絡的過ぎだと感じます 無理にお勧めはしませんが、一生に一度は観てみても損はないと思います 以上
