Q: Can you tell just by looking which orientation will be the fast (usb 3.0) one? or do you just have to test it with each device/cable?

We don’t know the positive and negative poles of your cable. So just test it each time. But You can remember the high-speed orientation of the cable to avoid repeating the test next time.

Q: Will this work with a usb-c webcam connecting to a usb-a laptop?

If the port of your usb-c webcam is usb2.0 / 3.0, then our products will be suitable for you. If your usb-c webcam port is usb3.1, then obviously it won't work, you need a computer c port with usb3.1. BTW, usb 2.0 / 3.0 cable is generally thin, while usb3.1 cable is relatively thick.
