INSTALLED: July 17, 2020 UPDATED: July 16, 2021 - Finally found one bulb out! You will need to get new bulbs with the G23 base and rated at 9 watts. Some bulbs mention the glass also filters out the ozone causing frequency radiation. I continue to be 100% satisfied with this unit after one year. Original Post: Our HVAC system is from the 90s. One of the characteristics we noticed was how the air did have a 'wet basement wall' smell almost a moldy smell. Beginning each season we often would run the AC with the windows open for a day to get things breathed out. This I found out to be referred to as 'dirty sock syndrome'. Good name. My first research about the topic found what others were doing to help reduce or eliminate the problem. Here is a list of different methods and results, you will often need to gain access to the evaporator coil: 1 - I could visually see some telltale mildew/mold sitting on the fins of the coil. I first used a coil cleaner like NuCalgon rinse-free cleaner. This is a chemical cleaner that does help clear the fins of dirt and mold. NuCalgon even makes one that is germicidal. RESULT: This does help the issue as it physically and chemically goes after the mold but after a while (about 1 week) the problem slowly returns. 2 - Purchased a handheld steam gun that directs a blast of hot scalding steam to the coil fins. Here I treated all of the coil area with steam to kill the mold with heat. (general sterilization temp is 160F and a duration time. Steam is 200F). RESULT: This does greatly help the issue as it 'cooks' the mold but after a while (about 1 week) the problem slowly returns. 3 - Spray a disinfectant, hydrogen peroxide, onto the coils. RESULT: This does a good job to knock out the problem but after 1 week the problem slowly returns. 4 - Bi-Polar Ionizer. Here is installed a NuCalgon iWave-R ionizer that is designed to be installed right after the airstream from the furnace filter. This device did indeed work well and I use it based on need (smoky cooking odors). This device is intended to charge the air with ions and keep the coils from developing mold. It also continues to clean the air of the home. These units are pricey (around $500) and it does a good job, but I still could tell that the dirty sock problem was slightly there (reasonable level). I installed my REKO UV system on July 16, 2020 and here are some of my remarks: - Unit is rather basic in operation. There is a ballast in the base unit, no OFF/ON switch as the intention is that this unit runs 24/7 and uses UV-C light to kill mold/mildew. You could practically make one yourself with the correct knowledge and parts. But it's important to keep this unit on always. - Installation is also straight forward. Just two hole openings to accommodate the lights. - After installation I debated whether to do a steam and hydrogen peroxide cleanse as I knew that would keep things happy for at least a week. But I was curious to see how the lights could change the situation on their own. -After about 48 hours, there was a noticed reduction in dirty sock syndrome (D.S.S.). -After approx. 100 hours an even better clear up of the D.S.S. -At the time of this writing, approx. 400 hours the air has been kept pleasant and I can only slightly detect D.S.S. when I put my face right into a air vent and inhale. I see from reviews that people have been using these units to make a sterilization chamber for objects. This is a smart technique and I can see how it would be effectual (COVID-19 disinfection). Some people try to use the unit to sterilize the air as it passes (air sterilization not surface). I am not so convinced that this will work as the short span of time the air passes air the light is short. The only way to improve results would be to slow the rate of air flow or increase the intensity of the light (physics at play). I do like to occasionally use the Bi-Polar Ionizer to boost the effectiveness and perhaps that is something you may wish to look into. I recently had my HVAC company install the REKO Lighting R2000 Air Purifier, and I couldn't be happier with the decision. ​The setup was incredibly easy for my HVAC technicians; they had it integrated into the system in no time. One of the main reasons I chose this specific unit is that the replacement bulbs are very easy to find and simple to swap out myself when the time comes, which makes maintenance a breeze. ​As for the performance, it seems to be working very well. The air feels cleaner, and I feel much better knowing there is an extra layer of protection for my home’s air quality. Of course, time will tell regarding the long-term results and how durable the product is but I am very happy so far. Great design and value for the money. Bulbs recommended to be replaced every 12 months per manual with G23 - 9 watt. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a straightforward, effective UV air purifier!

I wanted to add UVC to the furnace and thought about installing it in the return duct. But, it only does it's job when the furnace blower is on pulling in the return air. That way you're cleaning the air moving past the UVC. Otherwise, the UVC is just shining on a small section of duct and not cleaning much. So decided to install above the A coil to clean coil where mold and bacteria issues can arise, as well as cleaning the house air that passes through. Since everything is metal in that area (coil, duct work, etc), the UVC will not harm anything there. Note: The indicator light on the outside of the REKO unit does NOT tell you if the UVC lights are on. Indicator lights if plugged in without bulbs, I tried it, so it's just a "power on" light. Installation was easy, but easier using a 1 3/4" hole saw attached to your drill. Just mark location with the template they give you, cut the two holes, mount unit with the 4 self tapping screws, and plug in. DON'T plug in while looking at the bulbs, UVC can cause tissue burns to eyes and skin within a very short period. Because of that, I decided to cut a third hole in the duct and attach one of my UV photo filters (62mm) over the hole to block out the UV. That way I can see if the lamps are on. They have a 9000 hour nominal life, but I'll know when they're out looking through the filter. Attached a photo of that. Overall, this is a good product, for a good price. FYI - Unit has an AC plug at the end, meaning it's ON all the time. If it's installed in just a duct, it's only effective when the blower is on. Many furnaces over the past 10+ years have an EAC (Electronic Air Cleaner) contact on it's motherboard. I cut off the end of the AC cord and attached spade lugs for connecting to this EAC contact. Now it only turns on the UVC when the blower is on and air moving past it. This REKO unit only takes about 0.2 amp, so it's not a power issue. Bulbs are easy to replace when needed.

I bought this unit because of the many good reviews. It was easy to install (just two 1.75 holes to drill) on my ductwork. The bulbs are genuine Philips so I’m hoping I get at least 6-8 months of life from them. The replacements are $10 on Amazon which is reasonable. It’s best to leave this unit on continuously as cycling the bulbs on and off with the furnace will greatly shorten their life. At 9 watts, they’re cheap to run. Time will tell if this unit helps my allergies. A recent HVAC service showed signs of black mold in the Furnace due to condensation in the summer. I’m highly allergic to mold. This is common in AC units (ours is a heat pump) and many homes have mold spores being spread throughout their home and don’t even know it. Mold is nasty stuff and very bad for your health. This is by far the easiest and best remedy to kill it and prevent it from coming back. Jump ahead one year. The bulbs lasted one year and when I installed new bulbs they didn’t work as well as when the unit was new, although they did come on with some minor flickering. I’m assuming the drive unit is starting to go so I purchased another unit. The price reduced to $69 so I took advantage of the new lower cost. $68 bucks for a year isn’t too bad considering it’s on continuously.

Easy to install. Careful with the bulbs when installing. Installed one on top of evaporator coil and one in return side in my air handler.

A inexpensive UV light - I used to be in the HVAC trade and the lights we installed were over 500.00 bucks, so I don’t have my test equipment anymore but for the price I will just have to trust the science and a super cheap price 🍻

Product arrived in a reasonable time, and was as stated. Had a issue with a bulb burning out when power was applied, but I had ordered extra bulbs so no big deal. I contacted the company and they were easy to work with, and they quickly sent me a replacement bulb. I have this unit in my home, my dad's store, and will soon have one installed in my dad's house. My experience is a positive one, and we can really tell the difference in air quality. The technology is tried and true. For a large house, you will need more than one unit, or a larger more powerful unit. We opted for dual units. Do not allow exposure to your eyes, as these units can quickly give you a flash burn. We wanted a good passive system for air purification, and are pleased with this unit. Hopefully, each of you will have a positive experience as well.

I am not sure why this product has so many positives reviews, here are a few things to consider before buying this product. Positives: This product is very easy to install. It has a very good price point. Negatives: The indicator light on the unit, does not tell you that the bulbs are working. If I had not had a little 'peep hole' in my duct, I would not have known that the unit had failed after just one hour of operation. The bulbs in the unit have no markings on them, and I searched hard for similar bulbs on the internet and could not find anything similar to replace them. The manufacturer and importer do not seem to exist as written on the paperwork. I looked up the importers address and it does not seem to exist as a company address. I called the phone number that was on the instructions and got a 'sorry we are out of the office until November'. Therefore getting support for the warranty of this unit is impossible. After all of this, I decided to return the unit after 1 day. Here are a few things you need to know about a UV install that I wish I took account of before; Not all bulbs are equal. Low quality bulbs give out visible light, but may not give out the prescribed UV strength; its worth getting a quality branded bulb. Whatever the quality of the lamp, they do not last very long, 1-2 years for mercury lamps. Therefore you need to buy a unit with a replacement bulb available. (BTW, mercury bulbs should be disposed of properly). LED UV bulbs are quite new and are not commonly for sale yet in commercial units. :-( UV light can damage plastics inside of your AC unit. There is no mention of this in the installation instructions. When installing, you need to cover up any plastics that are not UV resistant. e.g. you should shield any flexible joints, internal wiring, insulation, etc. if they are not known to be UV resistant. Silver faced duct tape can work well for that. Installing the wrong lamp fitting results in messy holes in your ductwork that never go away!

Product arrived with one defective bulb. Advised seller and had a replacement bulb sent within a few days. Easy to install. Hard to say what effect this has on air quality (without proper meters) but the science behind it tells me it is a good addition to a home HVAC system. Due to this, there is no reason not to give 5 stars.

Easy to install and allergies are better!
