A wonderful tool
I’ve always been a fan of pencils, both wooden and mechanical. I don’t write a lot by hand, but I do like to have nice writing instruments. So I went looking for a new mechanical pencil, and took a chance on the rOtring 800, their almost-top-of-the-line tool. (There is an 800+, which is the same, but has a plastic tip, so it can be used as a stylus on a tablet.) I don’t like very thin lead, so I went for the 0.7mm model, and I chose black; I think pencils look better in black than silver. What sets this model apart from the company’s less expensive mechanical pencils is the “twist and click” mechanism, which moves the lead and holder in and out of the cylinder. So when you’re not using the pencil, you can retract it, and the pointy part won’t risk damaging a shirt, or just getting in the way. (In case you’re curious, rOtring means “red ring,” which you see at the top of every one of the company’s pens and pencils.) It’s a hefty, solid pencil, with a very nice grip, and a matte finish. I think the silver model is probably a bit smoother on the barrel, but the grip looks the same. It’s really a pleasure to write with. Again, I don’t write a lot, but I do often proofread things I’ve written on printouts, and I like to use a pencil. This isn’t a cheap pencil – it’s a luxury to spend nearly £40 on a writing implement – but it’s a nice tool to have. If you like pencils, it’s worth checking out. For a bit less, you can get the rOtring 600, without the retractable tip, if you wish.

Brilliant work pencil, and the retractable tip is genuinely useful
I use this pencil for office work and it’s easily the best mechanical pencil I’ve owned. It feels solid and premium because of the metal body, and it’s comfortable to write with for long periods. The weight makes it feel stable and controlled rather than flimsy. The standout feature for me is the retractable tip. It makes a real difference if you carry stationery around because I can put it in my pocket or bag without worrying the tip will bend or snap. That single feature makes it far more practical day to day than standard mechanical pencils, especially for commuting or moving between meeting rooms. Everything about it feels precise and well made, from the mechanism to the overall finish. It is more expensive than a basic pencil, but if you use it for work regularly it feels worth it because it’s reliable, satisfying to use, and built like something you’ll keep for years.

Most beautiful and well designed tool on my desk.
Without doubt, the best mechanical pencil I have ever bought. In fact I would go as far as to say it is the best writing tool I have ever purchased. The build quality is flawless. Solid metallic components everywhere. Really solid mechanism for revealing and retracting the tip. Loading can be a little fiddly and frustrating but this has been the case for every mechanical pencil I have ever had. I previously had one of these but the tip was bent by someone whilst I was away from my desk. Either that or the product failed. Replacement works just as well. Recommend the 0.7 over the 0.5 as 0.5mm Lead is very fragile and I found it breaks frequently. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Quality
Very nice pencil with 2b lead loaded. Is it worth the money? For me yes I write a lot and it gives me great pleasure using a quality tool

The best
I’m a huge mechanical pencil fan, love them for drawing and note taking. Eraser in the end and you can withdraw the tip of the pencil to make sure it’s safe. Best pencil by a long margin and I’ve used it for 50 years

Jolly clever, but not as good as the 600
The retractable point is a two edged sword - it's nice to protect ones' pockets, but it simply doesn't support the lead as well as the fixed point of the 600, and so as a serious writing and drawing tool this falls a little sort of it's junior sibling. The lack of a lead grade indicator really consigns this pencil to 'more is less' status.

Really solid and satisfying mechanical pencil
Really solid and precise mechanical pencil - I love the twist open/close for the lead pipe too, which protects it from being bent when not in use.

Premium pencil!!!
Excellent build (premium quality!!!). Got a black one, love the color scheme (with Gold tip). Retractable tip feature is very helpful (if you have the habit of dropping things!) Very happy that I bought it!!!!
