Does this come with any leads?

It came with a couple of leads, but I purchased another pack just in case. If it's been bounced around a bit in transit the leads may be broken Although saying that, my pen was really well packaged with plenty of padding. I know if I drop any of my mechanical pencils, the leads can break.

The twist mechanism barrel can be very slightly be pushed down. Is this meant to happen?

I think that if there wasn't a slight amount of play (on mine, it's a lot less than a millimetre) then the twist mechanism would grind a bit when it's twisted.

does this item also work as a stylus?

the stylus version of this pencil is the 800+

Are these the newer ones made in Japan ?

I have a bunch of Japanese rotring pencils, and think they are better than the German ones.
