Inspired by Cyrano de Bergerac, the comic story of a man with the heart of a great lover, the soul of a poet, and the nose for trouble. In the little resort town of Nelson, Washington, well-loved Fire Chief C.D. Bales (Steve Martin) is sensitive about his remarkably long nose. A beautiful, intelligent astronomer, Roxanne (Daryl Hannah), in town to study a comet, finds herself attracted to another newcomer, C.D.'s imported professional firefighter, Chris (Rick Rossovich). Roxanne confides her interest to the secretly-smitten C.D., who reluctantly passes it on to Chris. But Chris is dumbstruck, and convinces C.D. to ghost-write a letter to Roxanne-one that, unbeknownst to Chris, is an outpouring of C.D.'s own feelings for her. Since it seems to both men that Roxanne wants, as Chris tells C.D., a man that looks like me and talks like you, the deception continues, until Roxanne has fallen in love with the author of the passionate letters-while C.D. remains certain that she could never love a remarkable face like his.

Looks better than ever on widescreen Bluray!
This review pertains to the "retro-VHS-style" Blu-ray edition of 'Roxanne' from 2019.First, don't be fooled by the 'retro-VHS-style' designation, it refers only to the packaging: The disc in its standard Blu-ray case comes with an outer cardboard slipcase, cleverly designed to look like an old VHS carton from the late 80s. That's all it means. This edition (at its irresistible bargain price considerably under $10.00!) includes the film only. No fancy special features or Easter eggs. The disc menu is bare-boned and basic, and that's just fine as far as I'm concerned. Why?Well, I have loved this movie since first catching a sneak preview the summer it came out (1987). Subsequently, I've owned it on VHS, DVD, and now--best of all!--on Blu-ray. FINALLY! The film has been beautifully re-mastered and presented in true widescreen format, taking the bad taste of that abysmal 1998 DVD with its amateurish pan-and-scan away for good! Every detail (and subtle facial expression) is visible in sharp, vivid resolution--no cut-off heads or blurry edges. And the film is just as delightful as I recall; a clever contemporary adaptation of Rostand's classic 'Cyrano de Bergerac' with ingenious comic twists and a feel-good happy ending, making it one of the most enjoyable summer movies of all time!Enthusiastically, joyfully recommended!

Steve Martin is perfectly cast in this take off of Cyrano de Bergerac
Roxanne is a takeoff of Cyrano de Bergerac with Steve Martin playing C.D. who is in love with Roxanne (Daryl Hannah), but she falls for one of his employees Chris (Rick Rossovich). The movie does a great job incorporating elements of the original play. For example Bergerac was known as being a swordsman so in the opening C.D. takes on two drunks with a tennis racket in a faux sword fight. It’s also got plenty of witty dialogue which again was a characteristic of Bergerac such as when a man insults C.D.’s nose in a bar and then he respond by dealing him 20 insults. Most famously is Chris reciting lines to Roxanne while C.D. is hiding in the bushes telling him what to say.Steve Martin was perfectly cast in this very endearing romance.C

Practice Safe Movie Distancing
This 80’s RomCom ‘update’ of Cyrano de Bergerac seems full of promise. Compellingly cast and set, one could, it seems, be forgiven if expectations for a lexical romp fall a bit short. That this oafish film renigs entirely, supplanting verbal swordplay and clever canoodling with misogyny and furtive stabs at repellant flirtation, relegates potential viewers to a dim prospect for forgiveness or future date nights

The Nose Knows
Steve Martin, like Robin Williams is a comedic genius. That means that he can play drama and tragedy better than actors who can only do drama and tragedy. Yes, there are plenty of yuks, but there is also a warmth that few other actors can reach in a comedic performance. Sniff at it, if you will, but in the end, it is Martin's character who takes the also wonderful tragedy that is Cyrano de Bergerac (1950), and turns it into a posy of hope, promise, and winning by a nose.

Sweet romantic film based on Cyrano de Bergerac
Steve Martin is perfect as nasally enhanced guy in love with the lovely Roxanne. He believes he has no chance with her so he ghost writes love letters for a young friend who also pines for her. His super proboscis is the center of a series of wonderful jibes making self deprecating remarks about himself.

Embrace Your Uniqueness
This movie was filled with fun Irony right from the start. I loved the charming poking fun at oneself by Steve Martin, (who portrayed C.D. Bales a fireman) to him being a master story teller to himself and Roxanne. I enjoyed their exchanges of friendship and when she asks him early on if he remembers her, he chides, “I was trying to put it behind me.” It only becomes apparent after a series of events - C.D. Bales realizes that by embracing his own uniqueness does he realize once and for all - love is about how someone made them feel.

A great comic adaptation of the Cyrano de Bergerac story
Transplanting from old France to contemporary middle USA might seem difficult, but the film achieves this superbly. Steve Martin is outstanding as the nasally-challenged fire chief, and from the fight with the tennis louts, through the virtuoso display in the bar, to the hilarious scenes prompting his gormless fireman to woo the heroine, he is on top form. One of his best films.

Great film. Good transfer.
This is a sadly half-forgotten film with Steve Martin on top form and some great supporting performances. Now it has a good quality blu-ray transfer also, treat yourself!
