Yes. This size supports are plastic which is common with this type of splint. I worked in sports medicine for 25 years. And I wear this brace because I like it the best

Q: Does it have the soft stretchy material above the thumb like in the video or is it like the pictures with the more stiff fabric?

There is 3/4 inch of the same material the side is constructed of. It is soft and stretchy. The edging around the thumb is very durable, but comfortable.

Q: How do I know what size is right for me?

I have a small hand so I ordered the small/medium which fit perfectly. I would go by the size of your hand; for a man I would think a large would be appropriate.
