Z f | Full-Frame Mirrorless Stills/Video Camera with Iconic Styling | Nikon USA Model | Iconic Styling USA Model

I’ve been a Nikon fan now for over 50 years! Many film cameras in my past and then made the jump years back to digital and I currently have the Z8, Z7II and now, the Zf. I got the Zf for the nostalgia of the wonderful film cameras I owner similar to its body design; the Nikon FM, FM2 and F3. It has the heft I wanted and as many others have pointed out, it feels solid in the hand. I grew up on Nikons which typically had flat fronts with virtually no grip at all and got by just fine with them. I take a M-LG glove, but, honestly found the Zf felt good and steady in the hand, even with its small flare on the grip side. I’m using my Zf primary as a walk-around/candid camera and got a dedicated Nikkor Z 40mm prime for it (oh what a sweet piece of glass that is, even if there’s a lot of plastic!). Wow, I’m feeling back in time with this setup. I considered the switch to go to B/W or Color first a pain since I hit it by mistake a few times, but, I’m pretty much now trained to avoid that area on this particular body. By the way, the B/W tones are excellent. I convert color to B/W in some cases using PS and get some great results similar to my 35mm Plus-X and Tri-X Kodak days. The Zf handles the B/W perfectly and every bit as good as my manual PS method did. I found autofocus is right on and fast if you have the right lens on it. The Nikkor 40mm Z seems to work perfectly, even in lower light levels. IQ on the Zf is excellent. I was delighted with the 100 or more images I shot, both in color and B/W. Yes, my Z8 has a higher pixel count, but, higher pixel count/density won’t necessarily be noticeable in the final result unless you are doing some substantial copping of your images. The Zf is VERY ample at its lower pixel count over the Nikons that have 40m+ pixel count. So, bottom line, if you grew up with film cameras, while this camera can go as auto as you want or as manual as you want, and with it’s retro design, you’ll get as close to a older film camera as you want to go, but, have the new high tech there too for the times you might need it.

Clumsy operation with the PSAM / traditional dials combination design while the native z lenses offers no aperture rings. Very confusing! NO interval steps access when using SS dial for SS unless locking into 1/3 steps mode where you can only use back dial for SS. The menu is even worst than Fuji’s which is not organized well already. Some term/ name choices of the parameters were not as consistent in the menu to me. Also seems accessing “edit I-menu” function via MY MENU is not working. It could be user (my) error but I still can’t figure out after i spent quite some time on it. The play button should be placed on the right side. Putting all the way to the left top corner makes quick review / focus check after shots clumsy. The manual focus green box confirmation is amazing tho. Hope it also have Fuji’s split screen for manual focus to make final fine tune ( if necessary) even easier as pin focus point is not available for manual focus. The EVF is very nice but the refresh rate is quite slow in today’s standard. Some users reported on internet that they experienced EVF lag or refresh rate drop when shooting although I have not experienced such issue myself. The picture control- ( similar thing to Fuji’s film sim) is not as user friendly as Fuji’s film sim. It works to a degree but just not as intuitive as Fuji when customizing your own recipes. Nikon offers a software to that and there is a website out there dedicated to this feature but I am not sure if I can get the color easily as on the Fuji cameras still. Pros: built quality, mount / flange adaptability, nostalgic body design ( one of the all time best looking body besides Leica M bodies), tactile dials and controls, auto focus, 3D tracking, manual focus green box confirmation, image quality, one of the best AWB system out there, image quality is top notch, IBIS is one of the best also, simple standard jpeg SOOC color ( without sophisticated film-sim) is better than almost any system. Overall it is a nice attempt from Nikon. It is absolutely beautiful and well built with very nice IQ. But.. There are still lot of areas to catch up and improve to make a great old school digital cameras..something Nikon intends to make it to be. I would recommend this camera to more sophisticated users and to those who like the style of the look but don’t mind use it the way as a regular digital mirrorless.

I shot an XT-4 for a couple years, and while I loved the built-in color formulas for the JPEGs, and the controls, the AF was not very good for moving subjects, and the bigger F2.8 glass balanced in a way that always made me have to think about things. The ZF has fabulous AF, great sensor, and controls that are on par with Fuji. Also a bigger camera, and that’s great for me as I have larger hands. I added one of the many grips that can be found on Amazon - and good to go. I pair this with a z7ii for a great tandem.

This is the third retro digital camera that Nikon has produced, with the first (the DF) being a bit of a flop. When the second, the zfc, came out, it checked all the boxes for how a camera can also be asthetically pleasing, while offering a robust package. When I started using my zfc, I learned that it was a really good camera too and it became my go-to for carrying everywhere. When I learned that the Zf was coming out with improving to a full frame, I started adjusting the budget to allow for it to make its way into my camera bag as well. When it came in, it reminded me instantly of my first Nikon film camera when I was a kid (except for the split focus that I still can't understand why they took away, but I'm not an engineer so I don't know what it would take to get back there). Shooting with it has been an absolute dream. I'm old and curmudgeon so I hadn't really cared about IBS when people were talking about it, but the change in the Zf to use the focus point as the pivot for where the IBS works made me realize how much I shake the camera when holding it because those days of unnecessary blur are gone. Yes, if you have not shot with the old film cameras, it can feel unbalanced. If you were like me and spent your teenage years shooting with film cameras before they redesigned them, the balance will feel very familiar. This may be the camera that makes me retire my DSLRs and commit to the Nikon Z system all the way round.

Well done, Nikon! It really filled the needed niche. I have been a photography enthusiast since I was a kid, when my dad let me use his old Minolta XG camera in the 80s. Since then, I have owned many film and digital SLR cameras. Especially, I was a big fan of Nikon. Today, I use a1, a7, z8, z7, zR for most of the time. Because mirrorless are so good. However, that doesn't stop me from missing the ergonomics of old SLRs. I missed days when camera controls were so tactile. Nikon FM2, F2, and F3 were an absolute joy to use. I loved every little perfectly made button and knob. This Nikon Zf is VERY well executed in recreating the look and feel of film SLRs. I still have my FM2, F2, and F3, so I can assure you Nikon did a great job. I am very happy that Nikon filled the missing niche: vintage Nikon fans who loved the tactile pleasure of the film SLR and wished it were digital. Thank you, Nikon! By the way, I read so many comments on ergonomics. Have they even held an actual film SLR? Do these people actually use the camera so much that their hands get tired? Tell you the truth, if you want the fat handle, there are plenty of modern mirrorless out there. You don't have to go out of your way to buy a R E T R O - SLR style camera and complain about the ergonomics. I thought that was the most irrelevant thing to complain about a camera that is trying to bring back the FEEL of the older Nikons. It's actually comical and sad to read people complain about things for the sake of complaining. Nikon, please ignore them. The ergonomic of Zf is PERFECT.

I have a Nikon Z6ii and a Fuji XT5. Tried to love the ZF with new firmware 2.0 installed on Exspeed 7 processor for better action and sports shots. Images seem improved over z6ii even though same sensor. Deal breaker was the ZF's horrible ergonomics, heavy weight, and bulky size compared to z6ii. Add to that a Nikon 24-70 f4 zoom and it's no longer suitable for casual walkaround. Tried the add on Smallrig grip, which makes it even heavier and more bulky. Returned the ZF. Keep using my smaller, lighter XT5 if I want fun control dials, and z6ii which adapts fine to slower action photography. Not a pro photographer, but do take product stills so z6ii and XT5 are sufficient, and can be used for travel or every day carry. If you do not own a mirrorless camera, then the ZF is a great value in full frame -- if you can put up with the bulk, heavy weight, and poor ergonomics.

This camera is an absolute workhorse. I shoot weddings and portraits, and the Zf gives me both the look I want and the flexibility I need. The color rendering is clean, and low light performance is impressive even without flash. It’s got that nostalgic body style but handles like a beast. Manual dials feel amazing in hand. Paired mine with a Tamron zoom and the Viltrox 24mm — haven’t touched my DSLR since.

This camera is really as good as everyone says! I love it! The only thing is that it is heavy and adding the MUCH needed grip for long sessions adds to the heft but man is it worth! GET IT

Increíble cámara Nikon. Une dos mundos divididos hasta ahora: el emocionante mundo tecnológico mirror-less digital de 2025 y el romántico mundo vintage film, mecánico de los 1980s. Es una cámara que me recuerda cuando y como me enamoré de la fotografía con la Nikon FM2 (en la cual está inspirada esta nueva Zf). Fascinante, hermosa, compleja…la Zf hizo volverme a enamorar de la fotografía. Gracias Nikon!

Es una excelente cámara. Du diseño retro es genial. Sus funciones son bastante buenas, actuales y permite un control avanzado de funciones que cámaras de su rango no tienen. Con 8 pasos de estabilización (usando lentes Nikon Z), la función de pixel shift para lograr archivos de hasta 96MP y el diseño, se convirtió en mi nueva cámara de viaje y fotografía callejera.
