a film at the time all teenager boys, and maybe some girls wanted to see!! called a soft porn long before the days of the internet!! I did see it many years ago, only had vivid memories of the film, so I seen it was there to buy on Amazon, decent so price so, why not, I brought it, we watched it, it was maybe daring in the 1980s, but no so much now, I m sure we ll watch it again, but its another 1980s film to add to the collection.

Good film, but very dated now. Not how I remembered it

I bought this for a friend who loves the film. I think it's partly down to the "reverse plot", which is largely based on "control".Rourke is initially the man in control, in this passionate affair with Basinger, for it's 80's time frame it was somewhat controversial in the theme (BDSM and the mind control element psychological aspects etc). Evidently they did cut some of the more erotic elements.The main story is pretty simple really, it's just a passionate mostly sexual affair, and that is where it ends. Clearly Rourke is only interested in the control element and the sexual side, he has no interest in a real longer term relationship.The reversal part is from Basinger, when she seems to tire of being the controlled/degraded person, despite the exciting encounters (and there are many), and eventually does take control from Rourke by walking away from it all. It's a film I think I need to watch again to see how it sits.Today it's not nearly as dramatic as it was back then (many considered it to be one of the most steamy films made and a bit over the top). The performances are quite good, but perhaps the film lacks a bit of soul in the story telling, instead going for a more "cinematic" passion v a more paced serious psychological side.

Great classic film

Rourke and Basinger share character chemistry (despite rumoured creative differences) in what is actually a psychological thriller about the tragedy of obsessive relationships. What begins as a lighthearted, idealized yuppie romance becomes by turns a claustrophobic trap. (It thus makes a great and revealing double-bill with "You've Got Mail".) Lyne's pacing and cinematographic choices enlighten McNeil's much less accessible novel; the method characterizations are spot-on believable, the sad deneument inevitable. (Viewers cannot hope but that the utterly charming yet dangerously disfunctional John Gray goes on to some sort of psychotherapy before he kills someone.) Erotic but to a purpose, this is a perfect 1980's period piece which only rings truer in the commercially hypersexualized present.

Seem to remember watching this on VHS back in the 80's. Very racy at the time, but pretty tame now. Despite the presence of the lovely Kim Basinger, sadly couldn't wait for it to end.

I haven't seen this since I was a teenager but man, the older movies are the best! This movie rekindled my love of mickey rourke...what a brilliant actor !
