Introduces children to a standardised testing questions
This workbook is marketed as preparation for the "11+" testing. As it's a workbook created for 6-7 year olds, it does seem a bit pre-mature; is it really necessary to start your kids studying for that exam a full 5 years in advance? I see it more as a tool to introduce my child to the questions that are frequently found in these kind of tests, which are becoming more and more common. My children's school uses Cognitive Assessment Tests every year, for example, and the questions in this workbook are very much the types of questions found on those tests. One reviewer below writes a bad review of this workbook and then admits that she is against the increasing use of standardised tests and hates that some children might be bright but mightn't fare well in them. I, however, am not going to use my review to either praise or damn the fact that our educational system uses these kinds of standardised testing. This review is for the workbook: nothing more and nothing less.I've included lots of photos to give you a sense of the material found in this workbook, while still trying to be fair to the publisher.I own another workbook by the same publisher and I've noticed that the paper inside these workbooks tends to be quite thin, so while working on one side of the page, one can see a faint hint of lines and letters printed on the other side of the page. This doesn't bother my child in the least, and I guess thinner paper is more economical and even more "green" (=less wood pulp required, lighter and therefore less fuel used to transport, etc) but I do wonder if some neurodiverse, easily-distracted children might not appreciate it.On the back cover is a silly little comment that made my child and me smile. This book was printed in the UK: less shipping around the globe = better for the environment. Plus, keeping this printing in England means another few jobs were not lost overseas.Nothing is going to make our children smarter than they were born, but practicing in workbooks like this can help familiarise them with a certain type of question that appears on these tests, and that in turn can help them better show their natural intelligence.AS A MEMBER OF THE VINE VOICE PROGRAM, I RECEIVED THIS PRODUCT FOR FREE IN RETURN FOR A REVIEW.
