Brilliant for the price but you really DO get the original
Things to make clear for people scrolling through reviews.1) These are the original dark versions of the now classic stories meaning it's for kids in the sense that they'd work for Halloween or y'know, if you wanna traumatise them. (I.e. boiling witches to death in cauldrons)2) This is the original Margaret Hunt translation so while yes, it isn't in German, you still have to get around the Victorian speech patterns (old grammar / word usage ).3) The whole outer cover is GORGEOUS and the item listing image does it no justice! The dark maroon embossed leather cover with golden writing is gorgeous and looks amazing, add in the gold edged pages, this book looks truly enchanted.4) Because these are the original versions of the stories, they do get a bit confusing at times and need a bit of analysing and theorising to properly understand A) plot points / B) the morals of the stories. Probably best to give stories a google before reading at bedtime. While you may read this and see these as criticisms, i remind you that you are paying for a compilation of the ORIGINAL stories (dark, wordy and slightly confusing) with a beautiful leather hardback cover. So of course if you want an easy, child-friendly read, look elsewhere, but for those who truly want an insight into the foundations of so many famous tales, i can't recommend this enough.

Good buy
Ots a very nice book, but why I'd it being described as a 1st edition?! It's the 25th printing and it's printed in China (where else) 1st edition printed in China?!Just a strange labelling to me as a selling point. Nowhere in the book does it say its a 1st edition. However the cover tooling is good ,the page gold coloured edging is very attractive and a useful page saver ribbon is a good touch. The spine is robust and the book has a good weighty feel, decent quality paper . The type is average size so no need to squint . Good value for the money, definitely a keeper to hand down, pleased with purchase.

Absolutely beautiful book.
I am head over heels with this book.My BIL gifted this to me and I adore it.The hard cover is real leather and so gorgeous. It is embossed all over the cover and spine. The pages are I assume gold leaf but it doesn't state exactly. I have owned a gold leafed book before and it looks the same. The inside cover at front and back is also lovely with dark forest and a handsome owl to the forefront. The print is average size I'd say. I wear glasses so I will need them to read it.I have always loved the darker fairy tales and these ones are the best. The only con of this book is the ugly sticker on the back of the book which spoils the whole thing. I don't want to attempt removal incase I end up with a sticky mess.Highly recommend to all bibliophiles. β€οΈ π π

Misleading title
Great book but it's not a complete collection, a few fairytales were left out of this edition which could be found in the first addition of Grimms Children's and Household Tales,"the children who played slaughtering" to name only one.Are they gruesome yes, but they were still a part of the Grimms fairy tales.

This is a lovely edition. Looks like an old tome and is the original stories with all their gore and savageness.
