If I'm correct, the small rubber top is to help with the pressure. On that note, do you take that little cap off before you open the container?

I did not take the cap off and my children who were using it did not seem to have any trouble. The food stayed warm for at least 4 hours. It was great!

Is this thermos easy to open for a 7 year old?

I think so. But I’m sending mine back because it came in a paper thin white box and has a dent. I read this happened to someone else but ordered anyway - happened to me, too. :-(
