Two Decades later and this movie is still great
I remember watching this when it first came out and being moved by the story. Now, having watched it again I can say that I had the same reaction, if not more so. In a time when it is hard to find movies that portray strong, intelligent, honorable, and competent men who aren't a villian or bumbling borderline idiots, it was refreshing to revisit one of the best depictions of what a good male role model should be.

Bravo! Best movie I've seen all year!
I'd never heard of this movie before finding it on Prime. (I must have been hiding under a rock when it came out.) I decided to watch it because it starred Robert Redford. I don't know if it got any awards, but Redford should have gotten an Oscar and the film should have gotten Best Picture. It made me both proud to have donned the uniform, and a little ashamed that we as a people can be so petty at the same time. I loved the underlying message that if we treat people with dignity and kindness, we can bring out the best in them, excluding sociopaths of course, which clearly included the Colonel. SPOILER ALERT - I found it ironic when the Colonel Winter read the General Irwin's crime out to the populace then warned them that blindly following a man motivated by reproducible get them killed. It was obvious foreshadowing of what happened in the uprising and the men who died blindly following the Colonel's orders. He had a chance to avoid the entire conflict, but he was too prideful to admit that he couldn't control General Irwin. Of course, like most tyrants, he felt he was above the law and was too arrogant to believe that he could ever lose control and that others would hold him accountable. Finally, I want to give a shout out to Corporal Aguilar. He was such a great character and despite the fact that I just knew it was coming, I was gutted when he was shot. I found it hard to believe that with the three investigations into Colonel Winter no one called into question the questionable head shots with rubber bullets by expert marksmen. At the very least, I would expect the military to recommend additional training, but the cynic in me is unsurprised that no one cares about a bunch of prisoners. It's what makes them such perfect victims.

Astounding Cast & Performances
Masterful Ensemble; Redford, Gandolfini, Ruffalo, Lindo, Burton and more who've also worn the roles of their characters as comfortably as the chambray shirts are worn on their backs in this military prison thriller.Without any preconceptions surrounding military movies, prison movies, rebellion/mutiny movies, this plot will keep you on edge right up until the last minute of the movie.Redfords Character wants nothing more than to "do his duty" (serve his time) and go home. As protagonist, he plays three star general Irwin, decorated for service during the Gulf and Bosnian campaigns, a former POW from Hanoi, a lifetime well decorated, well respected "hero", who's plead guilty during a court martial hearing thus being immediately sentenced to serve his time at the "Castle".None of the prisoners maintain rank or status once inside, albeit the fame, teachings and heroism surrounding General Irwin will be difficult to readily dismiss. Jealousy, envy, and overall sentimental sadism sum up the Gandolfini role of Col. Winters, (Warden if Civ) the commander of the castle. Another superb performance which Gandolfini aces.Delroy Lindo serves to counterpoint the Winters Character in his support of Redfords General Irwin. (there are some Brubaker similarities upon reflection). The third act will surprise you for the inventive actions, use of props, character development. Without spoilers..I'll share that I've rewatched this flick a couple of times again after the initial viewing some years back. Im adding that "prison flicks", "military flicks" just arent my cup of tea; making this a stand above the rest enthralling production.Although Redford had garnered such fame and familiarity as an actor and director by this making, I found it perfectly easy and natural to see him dissolve into the General Irwin role. Same for the rest of the ensemble.I dont know if the film registered award nominations for best ensemble in 2001 or not, It should have.I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Enjoy the movie
I really enjoy this movie. Though I think Rod Lurie, having gone to West Point and hasn't seen any action, makes Col. Winters a great portrayal of himself. One of his best films though

Loads of action and violence
First watched a small part of this movie on T.V. but missed most of it. It looked so good and wanted to purchase the DVD, which i did and it arrived very quickly and well packaged. The storyline is exciting and very fast from beginning to end. Robert Redford was superb playing a disgraced high ranking general and subsequently becoming incarcerated in a Military Prison - The Castle. It is a great film with tons of action and superb characters. Highly recommended.
