If you think U.S. Christianity is THE WAY, skip this book
Various groups in my local church were reading and talking about this book. Their take-aways and commentary sound strange–not good or bad, just strange. I almost passed judgement on the book before reading it, but changed my mind and borrowed it from a friend. The strange thing I kept hearing from some of the folks reading this book was, “You have to do it this way, and if it’s not working, keep trying;” however that’s not what I gathered after reading for myself. The author often critiqued the Western approach to Christianity and the gospel. While comer said that the narrow way is a specific way to live (p26), he also said that your secret place doesn’t have to look like anybody else (pp56-59) and to “work with your own personality” (p194). In fact, he dares readers to ask themselves, “How do I enjoy God?” (p192)As we practice the way we are disciples, not being discipled. The author compares being a disciple to being an apprentice someone IS an apprentice, not being apprenticed. Disciples and apprentices train and practice.Another aspect of practicing is being a witness. Comer notes, “We’re witnesses, not salespeople” (p139). We are not responsible for the other person’s decision, we are only responsible for talking about our experience with Jesus and the impact on our life.I very much enjoyed Comer’s perspective of what it means to be a disciple. If you’re convinced that the Western (United States) approach to Christianity is the only right way, then this book is not for you. If you’re questioning that approach, definitely check out this book.

A great book on discipleship
I loved the way Comer explains how to be a disciple of Jesus. He doesn’t just tell us to follow the disciplines of reading the Bible and praying. Of course those are part of the process, but there is so much more! This book gives practical advise, but more than that, it explains a life-long process of becoming like Jesus. I loved every page, and it helped me change my perspective on life with Jesus.

Great concept, hard to read the first few chapters.
It’s hard to understand the first few chapters. It gets easier to understand and follow as you get farther into the book. It’s a bit daunting in the beginning. It was hard for me to keep reading, but I was part of a book club so I needed to finish it. Overall it was a good book. I love the message. The practices are very understandable and practices. I reccomend this book to other with the preface to them to keep plowing though it, at it gets better. We are following the practices and are online with them following his program. Google Practicing the way to find the companion program. You’ll love it.
