No- it plugs in and this sharpener is the best!

When we push the pencil all the way in it makes a funny sound and the sharpener part stops rotating. Is this fixable?

Perhaps you need to clean the blades. I use a tiny screw driver to gently scrape off the accumulation of particles that collect in the groves. However, I use my sharpener for pastel pencils, and it always stops on me since the pastels are softer than regular pencils. Good luck.
