Yes it is silent and it can be hung by a hole at the back.

Q: Given the negative reviews, can someone confirm that the item shipped and will be received is the clock in the picture and not a 'flimsy' version ?

Although the hands on my clock are a little flimsy overall I am highly delighted with this purchase.However,as to whether the item shipped is the same clock in the picture is question that should be directed to the supplier.
