Other toothpaste uses xanthan gum (fermented bacteria), but we prefer to use seaweed powder instead of fermented bacteria to thicken the paste. Lastly, the primary function of toothpaste is to remove the plaque, since plaque is what causes cavities, so you need toothpaste to be abrasive otherwise it's actually not doing it's job. Davids does not use SLS, but instead uses a more mild foaming ingredient derived from coconut oil that does not burn. Many that were unable to use a Peppermint toothpaste with SLS find that they are able to use Davids with Peppermint flavor because it does not burn the same way as most Peppermint toothpaste.
