Using for sour dough temperature management VERY ACCURATE Thermostat
I am using to manage Sour Dough Starter and Dough Proofing temperature management. The thermostat on this unit is excellent - and since the temperature sensor has a long cable, it can be placed inside the dough/starter to the bottom of the container to prevent overheating. The way it works is the thermostat controller and the heating pad are two separate devices - the pad has a standard 120 Volt plug - it plugs into thermostat controller and teh controller plugs into your wall outlet. It DOES NOT VARY the temperature of the pad - it is either full on or full off - the thermostat probe determines if Pad gets turned on or off. So, you need to place the probe in the correct place to ensure whatever you are heating doesn't get too hot or not hot enough - for Sour Dough put probe at bottom of the vessel or close to the bottom (I use glass jars/bowls) and cover with a cloth towel so it heats as evenly as possible. I also use inexpensive "Aquarium" digital thermometers with long probe cords to check my starter/dough at different depths because depending on ambient room temp and how much it fluctuates during a 24 hour period, you may have to adjust the heating pad thermostat to compensate and you may want to put a folded cotton towel under the jar/vessel so that the heat from the pad is more gradual especially in rooms that go down to low-mid 60's at night while you are trying to maintain 72-75 or higher temperature throughout the starter/dough container - u don't want the bottom to be 80 and the top 72. I learned not to put thermostat too high - if I want 75 degrees and kitchen is 65 I set temp to 70-72 cover with towel and watch the small external aquarium thermometer set in the middle of the dough and the thermostat probe that controls pad at the bottom - leave it for a few hours and check both readings - adjust as needed and use folded towel under jar if you need to raise heater pad temp just to be safe. But.. the heating pad unit probe temp reading matches my very accurate digital professional probe thermometer to 1/10th of a degree so I don't have to worry about "false/inaccurate" control of the heating pad- not bad at all. The Pad itself heats quickly but doesn't get overly hot - you can place your hand on the pad safely under full power - you don't want a pad that gets too hot. I find it raises ambient room temperature about 5-10 degrees without much of a struggle - the larger the temp difference between set temp and item/room temp the longer it will take to get there - low and slow - took about 5-7 hours to raise 1000 grams of covered dough in a glass bowl from 68 to 75 degrees with thermostat about 80% deep in dough towards bottom and temp set for 77 (bottom of dough was 77, top was 75, room temp varied from 64-72 in 24 hour period). The pad stays warmer, longer, closer to the electrical line cord end and cooler on the end furthest from the cord - as thermostat turns pad on and off during a warming cycle, the end closest to the cord warms first and then spreads to all corners but it does take time for that to happen 20-30 minutes for even heating all around.

Terrarium Tank Warmer (10 gallon glass tank)
I have 10 gallon glass tanks set up as terrariums. Since the substrate stays moist at all times, this gently heats the soil slowly. It's just a backup/booster as the house gets cold in the winter. It will not keep the air in the terrarium warm, but it does keep the soil warm. (which is how it's designed - a low and slow heater, which works best on water due to it's high heat capacity) Placed under the tank, with the soil probe set to "70F" it kept a range of 68-72F in the soil even if the room is 60F. My substrate is 4-6 inches deep, well aerated, and kept moist. Surprisingly, it works on tanks that have 4 little feet raising the tank up. (such as the Thrive brand 10 gallon open front vivarium tank) I assumed all the heat would simply rise up, hit the bottom of the tank, and proceed to leak out the sides. Without any significant warmth added to the soil. But it actually warms the soil just fine. Remember that very cold water shouldn't be poured into a glass tank with a heater touching it, because the temperature difference could crack the glass. That being said, these heaters heat very gently, without touching the glass (in my set ups), and I pour room-temperature (60F) water into the tank to water the soil. Pro - if you hang the controller up, you can easily see the current temperature of the soil reported by the soil probe. Downside - it's not quick/easy to change the temperature setting. It is a strange design, where you do NOT press the up or down arrow buttons to adjust the temperature up or down. Instead, you must hold down the setting button for a long time until it blinks. Then press up/down buttons to chose the temperature goal. Then hold down the setting button for a long time until it goes back to showing the current temperature.

Works best indoors
When I received the Vivosun heating mat, I initially set it up in my kitchen and set a small container of pepper seeds on it. I set the thermostat to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, which is a good temperature for germinating pepper seeds. The thermostat did a fine job of keeping the soil temperature to the set temperature. I have no complaints with the Vivosun mat and thermostat. Other purchasers complained that the mat did not lay flat, but I did not have that problem. Next I set up a little propagation station on my patio. I set a Jiffy tray on top of the soil heating mat, and put my planted peat pots in the tray. Once again, I set the thermostat to 80 degrees. Initially I left the tray uncovered. I discovered that without a cover the soil temperature in the tray was virtually the same as the ambient temperature of 60 degrees. I put the plastic cover on the seedling tray, and the soil temperature rose to about 78 degrees. Without the cover, it seems that the heat from the mat just radiated out into space. With the cover on, the unit was not able to achieve a temperature of 80 degrees unless the ambient temperature was about 65 degrees or higher. The mat is low wattage which means that it can only produce so much heat. It is not designed to be used in the way that I am using it, so I cannot fault the product. When used outside, it does provide some benefit by raising the soil temperature by maybe 10 or 15 degrees. Where I live, this can be enough to prevent plants from freezing on a cold night. However, for the purpose of germinating seeds, the Vivosun really needs to be used indoors where the ambient temperature is not less than, say, 65 degrees. Unfortunately, I do not have the space in my small house. I should mention that my pepper seeds are sprouting nicely even if the soil temperature is a bit less than optimum. I will probably look around to see if there is a soil heating mat with a higher wattage. I saw an ad for one from a hydroponics company that appears to be aimed at cannabis growers. Of course that unit is much more expensive than the Vivosun....

Good So Far
I'm using it to gently heat my colony of dubia roaches. I haven't been using it for long, but it's working well so far and I believe the roaches are enjoying the warmth. It seems like a good deal considering it comes with a thermostat (very important!)

Some issues at first but itโs been corrected.
Update to my reviewโI received the new replacement unit today and the new thermostat is working. Amazon and Vivosun quickly resolved my issue and sent a replacement that took only two days to arrive. Thanks to both Companies for taking care of this! Iโve increased my original 3 star review to 5 stars! Testing it outโyou set the thermostat to a temperature, I.e. 74 degrees (Fahrenheit) and insert the temperature probe into the soil or growing medium. If the probe is reading less than the desired temperature it will run the heating pad until the medium is heated to the temperature you want it. My new replacement unit shows all this in degrees Fahrenheit, and letโs you program the temperature in Fahrenheit. The first โdefectiveโ one only showed it in degrees Celsius and could only be set to temperatures in Celsius before displaying the Fahrenheit Temperature. The new heating pad, like the previous one works, no issues there. Keep Iโm mind though it plugs into the thermostat, the thermostat does not set or regulate the temperature of the heating pad. The heating pad will be warmer than the temperature displayed on the thermostatโas the thermostat is only monitoring the temperature of the soil or growing medium. Once it reaches the set temperature it shuts off power to the heating pad. My older review from earlier this week dealing with the defective thermostat: I am in the process of returning the combination seedling heating pad and thermostat because the thermostat doesnโt work. The unit I received did not supply power to the heating pad. I had set up everything as per the instructions and kept an eye on it, noticing that the โheatingโ light never came on with the pad plugged in. So I took a non contact thermometer and checked the pad temperatureโit was room temp and nothing more, then plugged in an outlet tester (in the photos) to check the thermostat plug in for the heating pad and there was nothing. Iโm assuming itโs not wired correctly and contacted Vivosunโs support via email. I emailed them Sunday and have not heard anything back yet, so I decided to exchange the item through Amazonโwhich had a very easy and efficient way of handling the exchangeโthey are sending me a new one which I hope works correctly and I have to drop the defective one off at my nearest Kohlโs store customer service department to be sent back to Amazon. Iโll have to update this once I get the replacement unit and can better judge the thermostat. The heating pad works very well and I had to manually regulate the temperature to sprout my seeds. It seems very heavy duty for the wattage it works on and should last a few seasons. I know itโs offered separately from the combination set I had ordered. If it had worked right, the thermostat was easy to set to the temperature on and I like how the probe is designed. The only other complaint I had was that you have to set the temperature in Celsiusโbut it will display the temperature in Fahrenheit. Some conversion work needs to be done if you want to set it at 80 degrees F for tomatoes. Had it worked and controlled the heating pad, had Viviosun contacted me back with their advice on what to do (itโs rumored on Facebook they are not responding to emails possibly because of being located in China and not working due to current events), I would have given this a 5 star review and written how well it works. Hopefully I can post that review once I get a properly working replacement.

Awesome heat mat!
I love this heat mat. I use it for kombucha brewing. After researching several similar products designed for kombucha, one of the reviews led me to these mats. I was honestly not expecting this quality at this price point. Very sturdy construction. Holds temperatures very well and temp probe is dead accurate. I keep my house around 67 F all year round and it was not an ideal temp to brew kombucha in. After I installed the mat my SCOBY is thriving and my flavors are much better. It stays a consistent 77-79 F. The controller is very easy to use and seems to be well constructed. Will upgrade to the double version when I get another brew vessel. I can't recommend this product enough.

Works as advertised for seedlingsโjust group your trays by target temp
Reading through the reviews, half the people buying these seem to be using them for kombucha, sourdough starters, or reptiles. I actually use mine for seed starting, and having direct temperature control makes an enormous difference in germination rates. Most indoor germination failures come down to cold soil, and pairing the mat with a thermostat makes it simple. I checked the temperature probe with a separate thermometer when I first set it up, and it was dead accurate. More importantly, my seeds pop days earlier and come up far more evenly than they ever did unheated. One practical tip if you buy this large 48x20 size: it fits four standard 1020 trays, but remember that the probe only reads one spot. Make sure everything on the mat needs the same general soil temperature, or you're better off running a couple of smaller mats on separate or no controllers. The mat handles water spills with no problems, and I've run multiple Vivosun mats continuously for seasons without any safety scares or burned-out elements. If you start a lot of seeds indoors (or are thinking of trying it), this saves a ton of wasted seed and hassle.

diy bread/dough rising box
I purchased the VIVOSUN 10"x20.75" Seedling Heat Mat and Digital Thermostat Combo Set primarily for creating a bread rising box, and it has been a game-changer. I placed the mat inside a clear plastic tote, and it provides the ideal temperature for my dough to rise. This is especially helpful since our home tends to be on the cooler side. It's also been perfect for maintaining a consistent temperature for my sourdough starter, which can be tricky in colder environments. The heat mat is easy to set upโjust plug it in, and you're good to go. The included digital thermostat allows you to switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius, making it versatile for different needs. It's simple to use, and the temperature control ensures a consistent environment, which is key for my baking needs. Overall, Iโm really happy with this purchase, as it creates a reliable, warm spot for my baking projects without needing any complicated setup, I saved myself around 300 dollars which a bread rising box from the store would roughly cost. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a straightforward solution to regulate temperature for baking or other small-scale temperature-sensitive projects.
