Excellent Home Theater Receiver with Great Sound and Modern Features I purchased the Denon AVR-S770H as the centerpiece of my home theater system, and it has been an outstanding upgrade. Setup was much easier than I expected thanks to Denon's on-screen setup assistant. The step-by-step instructions made connecting speakers and configuring the system straightforward, even for someone who isn't an audio expert. The sound quality is excellent. Movies have noticeably more depth and clarity, dialogue comes through clearly, and surround effects feel immersive without sounding artificial. Music playback is equally impressive, providing detailed sound across a variety of genres. One of the biggest reasons I chose this receiver was the HDMI 2.1 support. It works well with modern gaming consoles and supports features such as 4K/120Hz, allowing me to take full advantage of newer televisions and gaming hardware. Switching between devices is seamless, and I have not experienced any connection issues. The receiver provides plenty of power for a typical living room setup and offers enough inputs to connect multiple gaming consoles, streaming devices, and media players without constantly swapping cables. It has become the hub of my entertainment system and has been reliable for movies, gaming, sports, and music. If you're looking for a feature-rich receiver that balances performance, ease of use, and value, the Denon AVR-S770H is an excellent choice.

This review is for the Denon AVR-S770H. I was apprehensive about buying an AVR for my main TV. I've always used a soundbar and was happy with the results. I assumed that adding an AVR would make things finicky and complicated. I'm happy to say, that is not true. This Denon has been fabulous. My requirements for a home theater receiver were/are the following: 1) Ease of use and NO additional remotes to our current set-up (family needs, I'm not a bachelor!) 2) I need the ability to connect 2 zones: the TV room and I have a pair of outdoor speakers on the patio First, as to the remote situation, I use Directv and I use an Amazon Fire Stick 4k. My old set-up was super simple. I picked up the Directv remote and hit Power. That turned on the TV, the Directv box, and the soundbar (since it was connected to the TV ARC port). Simple. If I wanted to change over to the Fire Stick, I simply used the same Directv remote to change the input and then used the Fire Stick remote from there. I'm happy to say the Denon has made things even simpler. Not only does the Directv remote turn on/off the TV, Direct box, and the Denon receiver but now I don't even have to bother switching inputs. If I pick up the Fire Stick remote and hit the Home button, the Denon senses that and immediately switches over. Likewise, if I pick up the Directv remote and hit a button, the Denon will switch back over to Directv. So that is an actual improvement. By the way, in order to get the Directv remote to turn off the Denon, don't worry about trying to program the remote via the Directv menu (I tried all the codes and failed). Instead, go to the Denon setting menu. Choose Setup> Video> HDMI Setup. Change the "Power Off Control" to "Video" or "All". Now the Denon will turn on/off when the TV does (using the Directv remote). My second concern was operating a second set of speakers via Zone 2. That also works perfectly. Now when I step outside to sit on the patio, I simply hit the Zone 2 button on the front of the Denon. I can use my phone to play music via the Denon's built-in Bluetooth. Some users need to be aware: in order to operate Zone 2, the receiver needs to be switched from 7.2 channel to 5.1 + Zone 2. That's perfectly acceptable for me since my TV has only front L & R speakers and a subwoofer. So I'm not even using the full capabilities of the 5.1. If you need 7.2 and a second zone, you need to find a different AVR. In sum, I bought this Denon with some trepidation and thought maybe I'd have to return it. Instead, it does everything I want and then some. Of course, it sounds great too. I'm so glad I switched from the soundbar. UPDATE: 7/31/26 - Over a year later and I'm still very happy with the Denon AVR-S770H. Since my initial review, I made a few changes to my set-up. I added a center channel speaker and I added a second subwoofer. So now I have Left, Center, Right, and two subs (and my outdoor patio speakers in Zone 2). Everything works as it should. I used the included Denon Audyssey room correction to get everything set-up. Very easy. While outside, I play music through my Zone 2 patio speakers using the free Denon HEOS app on my iPhone (playlists, SiriusXM, Spotify, etc.). I'm even able to power-on the Denon with the app, so if I'm sitting outside already, there is no need to go inside to turn the system on/off. Also, since my initial review, I'm down to one remote. I switched to DirecTV streaming so I no longer have a DirecTV remote. Now I'm using a Roku remote only. Same as before, the Roku power button turns on/off both the Denon AVR and TV. If anyone wants to dramatically improve their sound quality and get rid of their soundbar, I would encourage them to try this receiver or another Denon. I'm really happy with the uncluttered look of NO soundbar. My front L&R speakers are in-wall speakers (grills painted the same color as walls), the center speaker is contained inside the media console, and the two subwoofers are hidden behind furniture. Great sound and no speakers to be seen!

After 1 week of use, this unit seems to work as expected. Works with my Samsung smart TV, turns on and off with the TV on/off commands. Automatically switches to HDMI inputs when devices connected to them are turned on. Audio and surround sound are very good after the audio system and speakers are calibrated during initial setup. The HEOS works with my Sirius/XM subscription, but works best using the HEOS app from my iPhone. Using HEOS from the Denon remote seems to be more problematic as switching Sirius channels seems to overload the system causing streaming dropouts. Hopefully Denon wiill improve the internal HEOS operation with future firmware update.

This piece of garbage has a mind of its own. I bought it because I needed an HDR friendly device and it was highly recommended on more than one receiver list and went for a decent price. In strictly audio terms it is a nice machine, though I wouldn't say its features are extensive. However, IT decides when it wants to do things. It randomly goes to zero volume without me touching anything (around once a week on average). It randomly decides not to give me a picture when I turn it on. This has improved since the last firmware update. We are down from almost 20% of the time to slightly less than 10%. Yes. You read that correctly. I have to turn it off and then on again, sometimes more than once before anything besides a brand name will show up on my TV. It is supposed to have a screensaver but that never comes up unless they consider the stationary brand name a screen saver. I have owned this thing for over 6 months and actually seen a screensaver with animation twice. I have to turn my TV off if I am going to be away from it for any amount of time. It has had plenty of opportunity. The bottom line is that the people who write the firmware (operation software) don't seem to know what they are doing because this device is terrible at detecting REAL events and performing the necessary actions. As a software/media developer, my primary device is a PC but I have been using PCs with receivers for decades and never had these kinds of problems. Oh yeah... and the latest estimate of a firmware download is over 10 minutes.

I've only ever used Sony components for over 30 years. My latest Sony receiver experienced some problems. When I saw how much it would cost to repair it myself (circuit board swap), I decided to look at what else is on the market. This receiver costs less than the Sony replacement part with S&H. When the box showed up with full-sized, color pictures of the front and back of the receiver, I knew I was going to become a fan. Opened the box and one of the first thing I saw was a sheet of colored cable labels that includes labels for the components that will be plugged into the receiver. Pull the receiver out and see that the ports are color-coded too. Color-coded ports and labels is something I'm very serious about. I worked for years as a field engineer for a Fortune 100 computer equipment manufacturer. The low-end components started at $100k. For years, I tried - and repeatedly failed - to convince the product design teams to color-code the ports. To find everything I had fought for in a consumer-grade device was a dream come true. Not satisfied to make the cabling process as easy as paint-by-numbers, Denon embedded a video setup routine in the receiver that walks you through setting up your speakers, running the cables, and plugging in every single cable. The audio calibration process far exceeds what the Sony receivers do. In the box is a microphone with really long cable and a cardboard microphone stand you can easily assemble and disassemble. During the lengthy calibration, you place the microphone in 3 different listener positions - twice - for a total of 6 room readings. Adding components to each HDMI port was also just as easy and detailed. I have a small 'home theater PC' that it detected and gave me multiple names to assign to the port (Sony port names are fixed). I plugged my Xbox into the Game port and the top name on the list was Xbox. In no time, my home theater was back to normal - and I haven't even download the user manual to learn how to use the other features or go into the advanced settings.

Setup was surprisingly easy. No manual included, but a quick link to a PDF. Connection to PC, Nintendo Switch, Cable Box done in minutes. Setup Menu worked great. Bluetooth pairing to phone easy. Setup as 5.1 (waiting on 2 more speakers for 7.1 connection). Small glitch in that the speakers didn't respond or even test tone right away. Went in and out of menu a few times, and then they worked (did this once with a 2-speaker quicker setup and then did the same glitch when adding the additional speakers to the profile with the full 5.1 setup). Works with ARC well (Samsung TV that came with silly external box) and reciever connection defaults to a passthrough when not on, which is nice. Video is great and compressed audio cleanup works well. Didn't do Mic leveling yet, but the manual speaker tuning worked well at leveling things out for 5.1. I was expected a lot harder set-up and was pleasantly surprised. It's a quality product. Some folks may not like the direct DB volume adjustment but I find it handy, especially when working a little later at night, I can dial in a very exacting low volume so as not to disturb the rest of the house. Very happy with purchase.

I bought the Denon S770H to replace my 20 year old Optimus receiver. I wasn't looking to go crazy on cost but wasn't afraid to put up a little extra money either so I chose middle of the road for Denon. When I put this in my cart I was expecting to pay $649 plus but was pleasantly surprised to see a $200 price drop by the time I pulled the trigger on the purchase. Product came quick and I set it up the next day. I am only using the 5.1 set up at this time but the way the on screen set up walks you through everything it is a breeze. The AVR analyzes each speaker position individually to optimize the settings and provides the best balances possible. This receiver takes my old speakers to a new level of enjoyment without buying anything else (at this time). Watching a Football game it makes the sound come as though you are actually in the stadium. Love it! Still haven't tried all of the options for inputs yet, but I'm sure there will not be any disappointments. I would highly recommend Denon.

Drops the blue tooth connection every listening session. Lacks a bass and treble adjustments.

No lie, I cannot exaggerate enough how much I love this AVR. It is the best AVR I've ever used honestly. The audio quality is unbelievable when I have my 5.1 setup and I'm not even at 7.2 yet. I love that it has Audyssey for auto correction. I set it up, got it rocking tried it all out and then set up Audyssey and holy smokes. It's unbelievable difference what Demons auto eq is capable of. Sounds perfect. Very clean interface with great Bluetooth and has been nothing but reliable. Love it. Cant recommend this AVR enough. I got it for I think 600$ on prime day. Worth every dollar. Set it up with 5.1 Yamaha sound system and man. I like my own audio more than the movie theatres now. OLED tv next? Well see. If you're contemplating it. Just buy it, you'll have 0 regrets.
