Q: Blade edge is 1.73" ?

No, the blade edge is 3 inch I not sure why they put in the 1.73 unless they are talking about the rear or hammer portion of the head. I will warn you though it comes in a “shaped” edge but DULL you will have to sharpen it yourself if you wish to cut wood.

Q: Would 5his be good for removing weeds ?

I use this tool in the garden. It is great for loosening hard-packed soil and cutting roots. I don't think it would work well as a woodworking tool. The blade is not very sharp and the head shape and weight aren't quite right for cutting wood. The marks on the handle let you use it like a dibble for planting, too.
