Stanley's Stick

Delightful tale, lovely to share
John Hegley's writing is always quirky and thought-provoking, and Stanley's Stick provides a gentle story for young children (easily enjoyed by adults too). The illustrations, in partial collage, are delightful. We follow Stanley and his friend, and learn the value of sharing - and starting again.Hegley also has several poetry collections suitable for children.

A book for over 5s
A nice book about a boy with a stick. Could be used to inspire children to use sticks in a variety of different ways.

Lovely story.
Bought as a gift for our nephew.his grandpa is called Stanley so thought grandpa could read it to him and it could become their special book.who doesn't come home without a stick or two when out for a walk in the woods ..I know my children always did when they were little.

Lovely pictures, stupid story
I like imagitave play, and encouraging this in my son (2 years old) which is why I bought this book. I work in child development also, so could see the value in a story where a stick can be whatever you want it to be. But the story is just not suitable for children - it's more for adults. It's very poetic and uses complicated metaphors which a child just wouldn't understand. It dosn't flow well either. It's such a shame as the pictures are brilliant. I do read it to him, but I make up my own story as I go along as he loves looking at the pictures!
