While Basic Fantasy RPG is not for everyone, but it is super easy to learn and play. The required materials to get started are easy to obtain and inexpensive for someone interested in getting into the Table-Top RPG scene. The Core Rules are limited compared to similar and more popular products, but there are tons of community developed add-ons which can increase the complexity and sophistication of the game to suit almost any player.Unlike other TTRPGs, profit is not the motivation for game development. There isn't any corporate non-senses in the way of the folks who develop this game, and it shows. The rules area plainly written without un-needed non-sense. You can tell the developers just love the game.

Love this system, great value. The rules are available online for free but I like having a book. Book itself is high quality. Retro gaming at its best.

One of the first OSR “Retro-clone-ish” games that took all the good stuff of the original fantasy game and combined it with some of the sensibilities of modern D20. If you are looking for an all-in-1 OSR game, this is one of the best. Not only does it provide everything you will ever need, this version (4th edition) has a larger, easier to read font size and a TON more cool illustrations. Not only that, but it has a mega-ton of totally FREE pdf content online, and a bunch of at-cost dead-tree books. Since you can check out the content free online, the only question would really be about the print quality from Amazon…so I will say, my copy is excellent. Very sturdy, no warping, crisp and clean…and free shipping. Probably the most band for your buck of any rpg on the market today IMHO.

Basic Fantasy RPG (BFRPG) is the spiritual successor to BECMI in my opinion. I have thousands of hours invested into this system and it is worth every penny. Great Job Chris Gonnerman and the entire BFRPG team!

Old school RPG book really enjoy the gaming experience with this. Must have for any gamer.

Fantastic starting point for anyone looking into the ttrpg hobby, best to learn here before expanding to the top two ttrpgs.

At first I was a bit hesitant but I'm glad I picked up 4e since I have the 3rd edition core book. For me its the best version of BX with a good mix of AD&D1e. This system is extremely hackable. The core book alone will give you years upon years of playability for less than a #1 off a fast food joint menu. Then there is even more free supplements on the Basic Fantasy website. The adventures there will give you easily years of play FOR FREE!!!. You can get 1980s D&D with a modern twist for a seriously low cost or for free. Basic Fantasy is my go to for BX as Castles & Crusades is my go to when I want that AD&D 1e feel. I HIGHLY recommend C&C. Both systems capture what D&D is supposed to feel like. They both do D&D better than modern D&D. Let's face it times are hard and money just doesn't go as far as it used too. That being said if you want to keep costs down give Old School a try. Basic Fantasy is the way to go. Also check out OSRIC (1e) it's a free download also. You can even add more 1e to your Basic Fantasy game via OSRIC without spending a dime. Or just play it as is. It's an all in one book ready to go. In the end Old School is where it's at.

Precise, basic fantasy rpg. As good as it gets. MANY other big names should pay attention to this book on how to do it right.

Not much to say here. It's BFRPG. It's cheap. It's OSR. It's well written.If you are new to OSR or got the OSR bug, get this one. It's a very good starting point.

The Rules and PDFs are available for free on the Author’s site, but this softcore rulebook is absolutely amazing to work with and a pleasure to read.The US Letter format really makes the Layout work as intended as opposed to the A5 booklets I made myself. I’d say it is well worth it to get the book over selfprinted solutions or just looking at the PDFs on your Laptop if you’re going to play the game a lot.

What can I say about the system that already hasn’t been said? This edition goes into CC instead of OGL. There are some clarifications. It is a good base system and living in Japan means I can usually get things print on demand.Just remember that BF is a community project. These physical copies are just to have a physical copy. Also the project benefits from materials developed in your game being shared as we all help build a game together.
