it is not easy. Using epoxy or a heat knife never gives ...
This tool is a dream come true. I recently purchased a salvaged motorcycle as a project not too long ago. The plastic farings had snapped off in several places due to it being dropped on both sides. I have tried repairing plastic before, and let me tell you, it is not easy. Using epoxy or a heat knife never gives you the type of control and precision you get out of this kit. It includes a booklet with all the different types of plastics it works on. Not only that, but it also has different techniques for fixing different types of breaks. It also has recomendations for different tools and epoxies if the plastic isn't compatible with this tool. Very helpful and I learned a lot just by buying this. Saved me hours of gluing.

made in China
The tool itself works just great. The temperature adjustment is nice, as is the supply of various plastic rods. My one disappointment is that it's made in China. I was going to buy a Chinese plastic welder before I discovered this unit. I really do prefer to buy products made in the USA, even at a premium. So I was willing to pay extra for this, and did. When it arrived however, the tool had a sticker on it which said "Made in China". Also, the storage box is a bit cumbersome to use; the parts don't stay in their assigned places so even though you try to put it away neatly, once you open it back up the parts are just floating around. And the cord management in the box has room for improvement. Again, the welder works great, and I've used it extensively on several different projects; But it's still made in China. If you're going to buy China-built it's not clear the adjustable temperature is a huge improvement over the fixed-temperature $16 Harbor Freight equivalent, at one tenth the cost.

This is a Must-Have Welder!!!
Initially I purchased this to repair a vibration fracture in my ATV Fender. Along with the Welder Kit, the Mfg includes a DVD mini-Course. If you follow their instructions, you will be AMAZED by all the plastic junk which you can repair (and save from the junkyard)(saving your wallet as well). I followed their instructions, and Welded/Repaired my ATV Fender's creeping Crack. After I finished sanding and painting, you cannot even tell there was a Crack. This Welding Kit is truly a worthwhile tool; and if you do any repairs, this one is a MUST-have. As more and more things are being fabricated with sooooooooo many different formulations of different Plastics, having this Kit will pay for itself many times over. Hint: Prepping the Materials, and "Choosing the proper Welding Rod" are KEY to a Great Weld; don't care if it's Metal or Plastic. My preference in Welding Rod for Welding Plastics (thus far) is their 'FiberFlex' Rods. (Same material used in Automotive Bumper Covers. Very-Very Durable, and Bonds well with many other Plastic types).

Awsome
I don't usually leave reviews at all. I read the reviews on this and decided I would give it a try. Just like another person that reviewed it, I used it on my 2003 gmc dually bedside. It worked perfect. It did everything it said it would do. I had larger gaps than others have filled and it worked flawless. It takes a few minutes to get used to the flow and holding it. After that it works seamless. Thank you so much this just saved me $1800.00.

Pro tool at a Pro Price - Better options for Home Users.
Let's get something straight: If you're looking to fix car bumpers or large plastic objects (such as water drums), this may be a 4 or 5 star item to you. If you want to have something professional looking in your automotive shop, this is a must. Its mostly for show, but it'll make your customers think since YOU have a Professional plastic welding kit, that they can't accomplish the same thing at home without dumping a bunch of money into it. If you're looking to get something to fix your random, at home, cheap plastic walmart junk that broke (things like 5 gallon buckets, or those springy latches on remote control battery doors that always seem to snap). Or you want to smooth your 3D prints from a 3D printer. Or you just want to experiment and learn how to weld plastic; then there are WAY better options. I suggest getting a good wood burning iron kit such as: Walnut Hollow Creative Versa Tool with Versa-Temp Temperature Control This link above is to a unit that's less than $25 (about 12% the cost of this item); it also has different tips; and a variable temperature control. The thing I don't like about this is that the temperature doesn't vary very much. I more highly recommend getting these two items instead: Weller Woodburning Kit Wall Lenk LTR100 Temperature Regulaor It'll cost a little more than $60 for the two (33% the cost of the Mini Weld Model 7). But is more versatile. The Wall Lenk does a better job at controlling the temperature, and the weller gets HOTTER at maximum output (900 degrees it says - I measured it at 750ish before I turned it down). You only really need to get up to 600 degrees at maximum. The weller is better than the Walnut Hollow because the knife attachment uses replaceable blades. Also, the temperature control of the Walnut Hollow is something like 1 or 2 feet from the iron on the cord. It may as well be 6 inches; it gets in the way so much. Plus the Lenk really does a better job varying the temperature. ******************************************************************************************* The true benefit of this kit is that its well organized; comes with various types of rods to experiment and learn with; and instructions to get you started. Also, most importantly, the kit has EXCELLENT fit and finish. The cords are high quality, the device feels sturdy and oozes "durability". It's a positive contrast in quality to most consumer electronics. In addition, the tips included are large and durable. The large-ness of the tips allow it to hold more heat and melt a bigger swath of plastic. Also the injector tip is superior for filling gaps or molds with the welding rods. The reason I feel it is a two/three star item however is because it's not what they say it is on the website. My iron (using my kitchen meat thermometer) got up to 470~500 degrees F at maximum. Thats not really hot enough to melt all plastics. Good for bumpers and such, but not so much for mucking around with things like PET drink bottles. Also; this isn't a 200 Watt iron. I don't know where that BS number was pulled from, but my Kill-A-Watt EZ Electricity Usage Monitor measured it at 60-70 Watts. It peaked in the 120 watt area when I first turned it on to maximum from dead off. This is not so surprisingly, similar in power to the Urethane Supply Company Mini-Weld Model 6 Airless Plastic Welder 5600HT also offered by Urethane Supply Company; which does state the iron in that kit is 80 Watts. While I was building a custom cup holder for my car, I had both the Weller/Lenk combination I mentioned earlier and the Mini 7 up and running, and I reached for the weller more often. It could get hotter which made it easier and faster to work with the polypropylene and if I had used the bigger tip on the weller (theres one included about the size of a nickel); I probably never would have touched the Mini 7. I did use the mini 7 to smooth things because the tip on it was large and better suited for that purpose. Also, I guess if I had a need to inject plastic weld rod into something the mini 7 might be better; but its really not that hard to hold the plastics together, lay the rod on top and just melt and mix them all together with the hotter Weller/Lenk combination. Just my two cents; happy welding!
