To Live and Die in L.A. (4KUHD) [Blu-ray]

Do you like those movies where the line between cops and criminals is blurred? Is it not what you do, but why you do it, that determines if you're a good guy or a bad guy? The 80's had a bunch of gritty 'neo-noir' kind of crime movies and this is one of the better ones. Try this and you'll be part of the clique that knows about this cult classic. This movie doesn't get the credit or the attention it deserves. The cast is great, the sound track is great, and it has one of the great car chases. Not as good a Bullitt, but up there with Ronin. Finally, the counterfeiting montage at the beginning is great cinema. Sometimes it is on Amazon Prime for free, so you can 'try before you buy'.

Never saw this film before, what a thrill ride. Fealt like i was there with the amount of clarity and detail in the film, amazing transfer or preservation. Thrilling movie with a great score to go with it.

There are a few versions of TLaDiLA available but this version is recommended because the transfer quality is superior; this is a movie worth the extra sheckles. Featuring a pre-NCIS William Peterson as well as a very young - and very good looking - Willem Dafoe in an intriguing story that is beautifully shot with plenty of action in opposition to the more intimate & personal scenes scattered throughout. Technically, it's a very tight and super realistic film which really benefits for Friedkin's attention to detail as well as the technical advisors brought to the set in service of the story. Quite different from his previous films in some ways but William Friedkin's skills behind the camera really shine through on this outing. Extras include a strong director commentary, several making of featurettes and a nice stills gallery. Full Disclosure: I've adored this film from William Friedkin since staying up past bedtime to see it on TMC - F!, I'm old - so it was a foregone conclusion that this disc was going to be a part of my collection eventually. This is my third favorite lA "classic" crime film behind LA Confidential and, of course, Chinatown. Its story line is pretty straightforward (unlike the 2 others) and while it seems now dated, the image transfer is excellent in the BluRay format. My one criticism with this product is the sound mix. Anything other than dialogue, cars, gun fire etc is at such a high sound volume compared to dialogue that I was forced to watch it with my remote so I could either increase or rapidly decrease the sound volume. I don't know if this is a result of the remastering, and I know starting in the 70s studios began this habit of large discrepancy between dialogue and sound but this is even more pronounced. For that reason I wouldn't buy this version again.

Great movie. Great transfer and a great price.

This movie is so underrated this is Friedkin’s finest work this movie grabs you from start to finish the cast is phenomenal and the music score is Wang Chung’s finest hour this is one of my top ten favorite movies of all time and now it’s in 4K is just icing on the cake buy it I promise you won’t regret it 👌

Back in the middle of the 80's no movie seemed to be more raw and original than this masterpiece. The pace of this film is excellent and fast like flying through gears of a sports car. Starting with a story that grips you from the beginning of the film straight on to the end. Layers of each character are introduced at a fast pace creating a chaotic norm for their personalities to create this dramatic cop drama and push the dark driven storyline. The attitude, action and dialogue of this almost 40 year old film is still strong even in today's standards. This movie has to have one of the most complicated car chase scenes ever planned. Plus one of the most original twisted endings of any intense action packed drama. Sum that up with a strong cast that brings this film to life and you have the closest thing to a movie from the 80's achieving perfection.

I remember watching this movie when it first came out back in the 80's. After all this time it still plays well with its storyline and action. Sure it's dated for its time period but this movie was so well received back then and will play well for the new generation of film afficinados who appreciate great films. Nice to see actors William Peterson and William Dafoe back in their stages of their careers. The music of Wang Chung also adds the intensity and complements the movie as a whole. Very representative of that 80's sound. Again I have been waiting for this to come out on digital but being that they are taking their time on this for whatever reason this also now comes in 4k disc so it really warranted the purchase for me! A must for collectors.

This is a very good 80s cop movie. The performances are good and the story is fun. The transfer on 4K looks great.

Reviews of this restoration have been mixed online but I honestly couldn't fault it. This is perfect to own in 4K if you love this film like I do. Why wouldn't you want to see 80s William Petersen's crotch in the highest quality possible? Beware UK buyers though, despite loving Kino Lorber's restoration and their sleek slipcover, I was disappointed that I couldn't play the special features as it was region A locked. These can be viewed on YouTube so it's not a big deal, but it's worth knowing before you buy. PS: I would love Manhunter (1986) in 4K so I can run a home cinema double feature. Petersen is fantastic in that too, and the films thematically work with one another.
