ITS QUITE SIMPLY THE BEST BIO MEDIA, AND I WILL EXPLAIN WHY AND SHOW RESULTS
I have used Seachem Matrix for well over a year now, and I can say for a fact that it is by far the best media out there, and the results I have had using it prove it.Every bio media will give your filter the surface area to grow aerobic beneficial bacteria that convert ammonia and nitrites into nitrates. What's so special about Matrix is that each piece of the bio media is so porous yet dense that there are nooks and crannies in each piece that a special type of beneficial bacteria is able to grow, specifically anaerobic bacteria. This anaerobic bacteria consumes nitrates. This type of beneficial bacteria is one that can only grow in environments that are not oxygenated (which is why the porosity and nooks and crannies Matrix bring to the table are important).I keep African Cichlids (Mbuna specifically), which have a reputation for being some of the most demanding fish when it comes to bio load. I keep the tank stocked moderately, overfiltered, and chalked full of as much Seachem matrix as I can fit. Before switching to Matrix I was using the typical ceramic rings and doing weekly water changes. My Nitrates would get up to 30-40 PPM after 1 week with no ammonia and no nitrites. After switching to Seachem Matrix and giving the anaerobic beneficial bacteria a couple months to establish itself, it is a night and day difference. I test my water weekly. I was shocked to begin seeing a decline in the numbers on my nitrate tests. Probably around the 6 month mark or so, there began to be such a little amount of nitrates that I could skip water changes. I keep everything recorded in a spreadsheet and there was one point that I went 2.5 weeks without a water change and my nitrates were only at 25 PPM, KEEP IN MIND THESE ARE FULL SIZE MBUNA WITH NO PLANTS IN THE TANK. I still do weekly water changes and test my water weekly, but typically there is so little nitrates that it wont even register on a dip test strip and API registers between 0 and 5 PPM. Truly amazing. The proof is in the pudding, Seachem Matrix makes big claims and much like every other Seachem product, it backs them up. 10/10 would recommend, I will never run another bio media in any tank.

The BEST media available
Matrix is a high-porosity biological filter media designed for aquarium filtration. Matrix has a vast internal pore network that provides surface area for the attachment of beneficial bacteria. Porosity and high surface area alone should be the measure of biomedia.Matrix has a primarily macroporous internal pore structure. This means the pores are large enough for the bacteria to enter and form stable colonies. Large surface area measurements sound impressive but if the pores are too small the bacteria cannot get in and colonize the media. This means the bacteria can only grow on the unprotected surface of the biomedia. The colonies are vulnerable to washout caused by high velocity “microshear,†which is the scrubbing effect of water flowing over smooth surfaces.Seachem Matrix protects nitrifying bacteria inside the porous network so the colonies remain undisturbed. But there’s more. Under the right conditions natural denitrification can occur, lowering nitrate levels without the need for a special de-nitrification filter. Matrix provides the right microenvironment that allows nitrification and natural denitrification to take place in the same filter.Seachem Matrix will remove ammonia, nitrite and nitrate! Matrix can be used in any power filter, canister filter, contactor or filter sump. Matrix never needs replacing and can be rinsed if it becomes dirty.

Great for Canister Filter
This media has been great in my FX6, one tub works for an entire FX6 filter. If you pair it with there chemical filter material you will see crystal clear water.

Be sure to rinse and remove nonporous rocks!
My bucket contained mostly Matrix, a fancy term for very porous rocks. However, Seachem's quality control is lacking. They even admit to other types of rocks being packaged with it due to mining. I thought they would care about their product more...From my pictures, you can see what the rocks look like prior to rinsing. Due to complaints of nonporous rocks in other people's buckets, I went through mine. The last picture shows how many were in the one bucket that I bought. The bucket contained just enough to fill two compartments on my FX6, or I might have returned it.Be sure to go through yours and rinse as you go! This also removes unwanted dust anyways.

Awesome amount of media for the price!!
I even had left overs after filling 3 media baskets in my Oase biomaster thermo 600. Great value, great product and I am very impressed with the quantity and quality.

Beware of the quality
The bucket contains mostly pumice but it also contains non-porous rocks! The presence of rocks did not bother me much, but these rocks are harder than the pumice and they crush the pumice if they are packed in snugly, when this happens these small rocks will get stuck in your impeller of the filter which would lead to a malfunction.DO. NOT. BUY. these buckets, I did not find the same problem in smaller packaging. Seachem quality control is lacking and will be returning back my matrix.

By far the best filter media
This is, by far, the best filter media you can buy. Tons of little nooks and crannies allow billions of bacteria to colonize and digest all your ammonia and nitrites. Because the bacteria can literally colonize deep inside each piece of Matrix, some anaerobic bacteria are able to gain a foothold. These definitely take a bit longer to establish, about six months. But they digest your nitrates! So depending on your load factor, you can definitely reduce the number of water changes and maybe even practically eliminate the need for water changes to rid your tank of nitrates. There simply is no better, or even comparable, product out there.

Buen material!
