Thinking inside the box
I couldn't stand our old letterbox anymore.A thin, brass coloured thing, squeeking and rattling around, slamming in the wind after being on our front door for decades. You'd grease it and it would still be slamming, you could tolerate it til the weather worsened every year. Was a postman being too rough with it?! It got to the point where we were sellotaping it shut just to get some sleep and hoping for a night where the wind wouldn't catch it. Thank god it is finally over! The job of replacing a letterbox on a uPVC door is on paper fairly easy but there some hurdles to overcome, perhaps less so if you're fitting one for the first time, as a replacement means you've got to work with what's there and make adjustments rather than cut everything to your new specs outright. The hole sizes for letterboxes...not much of a standardisation to them, they can be slightly different between models by a few mms, but there IS some standardisation in models falling into categories of: "12 inch"; "12 inch slimline" or "10 inch" and this is a "12 inch" (with 10 inch aperture). Then you work out whether you need a typical letterbox or a 'midrail' which goes deeper and the two parts to the letterbox slot into one another to adjust. As far as the product goes, it arrives in a fairly strong box, neatly wrapped, there is definitely a sense of quality and the box has a template on the back incase you need help lining things up with cutting into the door/midrail.The letterbox itself has some weight to it, there is a marked difference in the way the hinges swing, they are bigger, thicker and sturdier than the cheaper varieties and open wider but certainly couldn't be lifted by the wind. It's got some thickness to the metal, making it feel more like a ceramic consumer unit cover and I have high hopes that it has quite a lifespan ahead of it, pending on how roughly it is (mis)treated with letters!-Installation-I don't know if there's a school of thought to the contrary, but the side with the screws is also the side with the bristles and this should be on the inside side, if for no other reason than you want to make it impossible for someone to walk up with a screwdriver and remove it from outside your house lol (Old one was the wrong way round!!)Thankfully, it seemed to close flush despite some concerns from other reviewers that it might need the foam trimmed a little. I'm concerned the foam between the 2 pieces might wear away over the years and will probably put a very thin line of silicone over the top, outside part. What did let it down from otherwise perfection was that the longest pair of the 2 provided screw pairs was just about the right size (could have done with a couple more mms) but there was some momentary but quite intense challenge trying to line them up to screw the parts together without being able to see where they were heading, and whilst holding the portions in place (suggest you get a patient buddy to hold the outside part! and perhaps a torch depending on your aperture size lol).I think this could be worked on by having the screws enter a longer (or even extensible and retractable) hole to make it easier to get them where they need to go and not slip out before screwing.Aesthetically, the plain white looks nice on our white uPVC door (recommend a good cif/astonish and water scrub while you're getting the job done). It might have been more fitting to go brass to match the door handles but I suspect we might get a bit more life out of not being exposed metal. In short, very happy with the quality of this item and damn pleased to have something that looks like it's going to last and do a good job! Cheers

Love it.
Live on a new estate all with the same doors and letterboxes and we all get soooo much junk mail (sometimes twice a day). One afternoon we had a grumpy delivery person, who pushed back all our letterbox flaps hard to push through the junk. Along with others my letterbox was ruined as the plastic was snapped and flap hanging off.Debated this one for ages, whilst it looked great, it was apparently a few mm's bigger than my existing space. However it was the best one I could find, and needed something sturdy due to the amount of use it would received, so went for it, with the idea I'd have to expand the door hole a little.Weirdly it fit perfectly which I was very very happy about. However it was tricky to line up the holes between the parts. I spent over half an hour trying to get lucky and for the screw to catch the hole. I wish there was an easier way to do this! However that was the only bad bit.Looks utterly amazing once installed. My previous one had a dull matt finish, this is shinny and bold and catches you eye whenever you see it. Feels very sturdy in use and if it breaks anytime soon I'd be genuinely shocked.

Fitting to an Anglian door
Good quality. Quite heavy. Its not a direct replacement for an Anglian door, I had to file the holes in the door. The internal sleeve fits perfect. The door is a composite door about 10 years old.

Very nice quality letterbox
The front flap had broken on my previous letterbox, so I spent a chunk of time looking up different letterboxes and settled on this one. Despite it being more expensive than most of the others, this seemed like a high quality one. It's pretty windy where I live so I wanted to make sure whatever I got would keep the wind out.On arrival I was impressed by the weight of the item and could tell it was going to be sturdy. In theory this letterbox is easy to fit, however I had two issues:1. The location of the screw points were slightly wider than my previous letterbox. My door is wooden so I was able to increase the size of the existing cutouts easily enough with a round file.2. My main problem - this letterbox comes with 2 sizes of screw, and the short ones were too short and long ones too long. I hunted high and low in the DIY stores for a suitable mid-way screw but found nothing (the people at Screwfix were stumped too!). In the end I had to saw the long ones down by about a centimetre.Once I got over the above issues the letterbox fitted well and looks great. The flap is on the heavy side but that's what I wanted. It opens nice and high too so it should be easy for the postie.

Solid, Sprung, Quality
Why would you change a letter box/plate?My old one was installed by the developer, and of no quality. It flapped in the wind and was just horrible. This replacement is fantastic and just what you’d expect for your money. Both the front and back flaps are sprung, and made of solid brass. There are rubber dampers so it never clacks. The springs are strong enough to keep all wind out. The postie doesn’t seem to mind the extra effort of lifting the flaps. It comes with two screws lengths and fitted my standard door without any additional cutting or modding. Job done in 30s.The brass was also fully protected with film. After installation and removing it, it looks substantially better than the old one ever did. Highly recommended.

great looking letterbox
Purchased to replace an alloy/ plastic letter box in a composite door that Royal Mail had manage to wreck, this is a very heavy duty replacement item and looks great when installed. It is supplied with 2 sets of countersunk M4 screws, the shorter are 50mm and were just too short to fit my door thickness and the longer pair too long, so had to be cut down to an intermediate size. The only real niggle was one of the threads in the outer flap for the screws was poorly cut and i had to re-tap the thread in the captive nut. Once these issues were dealt with, installation was very easy.Recommended with the caveat that you may have to fettle the fixings.
